I have recently bought a couple of new front doors for my 90 off Ebay. They are fairly new and they came off a written off TD5.

Neither of the doors has a key with it, so I want to change the barrells. I see that Paddock Motors sell sets for about £15. Can anyone share any experiences of fitting these? Tips etc.

If anyone can answer some or all of the following questions, I will be very grateful.

1)Because I don't have the original keys, am I going to have difficulty in removing the existing lock barrells?

2)What is the likelyhood of being able to successfully drill the old ones out (I am reasonably accurate with a drill!)?

3)Would it be better to buy a couple of new front door handles (I assume that the handles house the lock barrells)?

4)Will attempting to fit new handles create its own set of problems?

morning,

these things are pretty easy to fit if a little bit of a fiddle. remove the door card and you will see the back end of the barrel. remove the screw holding that black bit of plastic and take off that metal bar that goes into the plastic. the barrel should drop out of the handle on the other side.

now your meant to insert the key and push the pin in to remove the plastic bit that is attached to the rear of the barrel. this may take some butchering as you dont have the key. might be worth sourcing replacement plastic bits.

push plastic bit on new barrel and insert back into door handle screw that other plastic bit back on with the metal rod attached in the orientation it came off.

think thats it. you can drill a hole in the metal plate behing the door card to gain easier access to the screw. line it up and it will make things a 100 times easier. (cheers tre :))

take it steady and dont wiggle the doors around too much... i found out the hard way and all the metal rods which link the locking mech together fell out! there are loads of em'

90 or 110? it should take you, 1st time around 45min/door.

Ps. door barrels are cheaper on ebay and prob the same as paddocks. make sure you get the newer type barrels or they may not fit.
 
They're easy enough to replace. They're just secured by a small screw at the back - remove the door card and inner plastic liner and you'll see it. Prize off the little clip that holds the linkage and detach it. Then remove the screw and the berrel comes out from the outside of the door. You don't need the key.
It's an awful lot easier if you drill a hole (12mm or bigger) through the inner door brace in line with the screw. Then use a magnetised screwdriver. Otherwise you're struggling to undo the screw at an angle and will drop it down inside the door!

Just a quick question, I've a new set of barrels for my doors and had a quick look at replacing them the other weekend, and yes I'd already sussed the drilling of 1/2" hole... Problem is, said screw is rusted to buggery and is rounded off. How do I get it off as I ain't got a drill bit long enough to drill it, or should I just source another pair of newer doors that aren't on their last legs anyway?
 
aint wurth bovverin then - git some new ones

I got a pair of immaculate doors off an 06 plater (wiv leccy winders) fer £150 - bargain or what?

Right. I have had a go on an old door following the instructions posted here and it all worked perfectly. Thank you.

However, I have just decided to tackle one of my new doors (off a TD5) and failed at the first hurdle. I can't get the window winder handle off! My old door had a bolt under a cap that flips off. The new one seem to be a solid moulding with no retaining bolt. Any suggestions?

Also any tips for removing the new door card with minimum damage would be appreciated. Tools / methods etc.

i think someone mentioned on here a while back that there is a circlip behind it... take a look.

not sure on your td5 door card. isnt it just screws?

Just a thought , doesn't the TD5 open with the ignition key? I know, I know , so does everyone elses, but isn't the TD5 supposed to, does this suggest a different lock setup?
 
doubt it. its just the barrel being cut the same as the key. mine used to have that untill i replaced all 3 of me door barrels... they all went in and out the same.

not that i have a TD5 though! ;)

Changed my locks yesterday, first one took little head scratching. For removing the door guard, u fiund putting a half inch chisel down the back of the push lock releases that so card comes off easy as its just 2 lil nipples fixing together. As for getting to the small screw wind window down undo all bots holding the plate. Also undo 2 screws holding door opener. Now you can lift the plate. I put a chuncky screwdriver in one of the holes to hold it up. Much easier.

First door, bout hour....second door ,10 mins.

Place a rag around the window handle and use a sawing motion. The circlip will pop off and you can grab it with some pliers
