Pretty sure the capacity is changed by stroke not cylinder size so that would be wrong. The walls are the same thickness on em.

Actually, I think you're right about them being stroked rather than bored out, not sure why the 4.6 would be more susceptible to slipped liners or headgasket failure then? Sure I read it (a lot!) when I was looking, though!

Sleaford? Have to look out for that. My two local ones are 77.9. Just come back from a weekend in Devon and that was all about the same except for one place which was 86.9 - thieving gits.

If you've got an iPhone try the MyGas app, it's free and really useful when looking for LPG :)

Had a Winders mobile (until it died at the weekend). I just use TomTom overlays and they're usually pretty good. I didn't realise that garage did lpg - I'll have to have a look next time I'm over that way.

I decided on the Oil Burner route even though they would be overtaken by glacial movement....

This was a descion of the head and not the heart, after having two previous 4.6's on petrol that V8 is just 'da bomb'.

But in these frugal times, I opted for a diesel as although an LPG conversion would be just as economical (if not more so) if anything happened with the LPG system, I would be forced to run on Petrol and that would finacially cripple me, and having to have sold the previous P38's for that very reason, it would break my heart and soul to have to get rid of another, so we decided to live with the snails pace and learn to live with it....

I mean I am not exactly in a hurry to get to work, so this is a perfect excuse to slow down and savour the views.....

As some people have said, buy one that's already converted. Make sure you buy one with the sequential feeder system, much better than a single feed. Having bought it, a good LPG installer will charge about 75-90 quid to give it a service. Also, go for one with automatic change over to LPG after starting on petrol, it will revert to petrol when you switch off ready to restart on petrol.
I've had my 1999 LPG 4.6 for two years with no problems whatsoever on that side of things, and I had a Cherokee on LPG for years before that, again, no engine problems at all. More garages are supposed to be providing LPG, but finding one can sometimes be a problem, and of course you can't carry a spare can of LPG!. I usually keep my petrol tank about quarter full just in case. Current price locally, to-day, (16/09) is 79.9 3 miles away from me, if I go to Kates Kabin on the A1 near Peterborough it is usually at least 2p cheaper per litre. My consumption, on a regular run cross country to Oxford, 102 miles each way, works out roughly equivalent by cost to 28-32 mpg. And of course I still get to enjoy that lovely V8!
Purveyors of doom and gloom abound whatever you buy!

Go for the petrol on LPG. Like most of the posts my 1997 4.6 has done 118,000 miles most of them on gas (single point) and its the same engine from new. Temp never goes over half way, even when towing a caravan up hill. Again all blocks apart from 3.5 have the same bore, its the stroke they changed, some blocks just happen to have more "meat" between the bores due how well they where cast in the first place, so one thats had a new block could still go again if its been cast badly, but like some on here go on for ever and never fail, some are just bad from the start, some are good.
I looked at a few diesels before buying a petrol on gas as the petrol ones just seemed to be better looked after, and like you i only do a few thousand miles a year and didnt see the point in paying over the odds just because it said DSE on the back! 4.6 HSE is the way forward!! :amen:

Update on LPG price.
Discovered on Sunday 18/09 that the Shell garage on the A1 at Buckden round-about (near Huntingdon) has re-opened and is selling LPG at 73.9p/ltr.

I have LPG on my 4.0. It cost me the same to run each month as my old Rover 45 1.8. LPG is not as readily available but of you find a few local suppliers then you can work trips to include a stop off. I run mine on petrol for about 40 miles a week to keep everything sweet. as for LPG conversions, the more you pay the better you get. My conversion cost about £1800 which is a very good system. My car has done 155k and I had a cracked block in March. New engine with 72000 fitted just had the inlet manifold swapped over. It is the poor quality Aluninium used and the fact the were bored out from 3.5 to 4.0l and 4.6l that caused the issues thinning out the block. I know P38's not on gas that have cracked so I would say go for it, the sound of the V8 is the best noise bar none!

a lot of service stations on the M6 do gas. google LPg filling stations there are lots of garages about just need to spend the time to look them up.

my turn

my intention was always to get a 4.6 v8 not converted and then have it converted myself. I wanted to compare it to economy agains my previous truck (Toyota Landcruiser 4.2 diesel) as well as assume that as it wouldn't be converted, it would be cheaper.

Took me 2 years to find the right beastie (80,000 miles, full LR & indy history and I'm only the 3rd owner - last one for 7 years). Got it for what I thought was a song .

WOW - power compared to the toyota is incredible even with the caravan on and MPG on petrol was comparible to the toyota on diesel.

Spent a decent wedge on the best sequential LPG kit I could find (fitted by my indy LR garage) and apart from the loss of the spare wheel I'm well happy.

Get LPG around here between 63p & 72p/ltr and get about 220 miles from a 90L tank (only filled to 80% of course). Absolutely no probs with it at all and I do approx 1200 miles a month just to & from work (as well as a fair bit of towing the caravan)

When I was looking I did try a couple of P38 diesels, oh dear, sooooo slowwwwww and handled less well that the petrol. Read the stuff about chipping and the probs with the gearbox not being able to handle the extra power so went with my head and got the petrol.

in my opinion the petrol/gas is loads better and agree that if looked after you shouldn't have any more probs than the diesel

just my 2p worth

Some bp stations are now doing accumlator discount on LPG you get a card stamped each time you fill up and each stamp gives you 1p off at the next fill up to a max of 10p per litre. not all bps do it though.
