My transfer box has the required internals, just wondering if a 300TDI linkage and shifter is what i need to be able to lock/unlock the diff or is it the more expensive TD5 variant

IE are they different?

D2 linkage uses cables. D1 is purely mechanical. Apparently they can be made to fit - but it will transmit more noise inside
 
Or do a bush CDL, length of bar attached to an armature on the spigot, drill hole in tunnel, poke bar through, fit knob to end of bar...
 
I've not heard 1 with TDI linkage, but I'd imagine you'd get a bit more transmission whine / vibration transmitted up to the transfer box gear lever.
