they do not light up when the lights are switched on ,can anyboby point me in the right direction to fix them , do the switchs have bulbs or some other way of lighting up and how do they come out also how do you remove the centre console switch panel.

The Window/Mirror switch panel has LED's for all lighting except the mirror button which has a bulb. The LEDs will last for ever but the bulb will blow, so if the entire panel is dark it is not just a simple blown bulb problem.

To remove the panel, just unscew the two screws on the inside of the cubby box at the top of the switch panel and it comes loose. You then need to jiggle the hand brake a little bit. There is a single connector towards the lower right hand corder and it is my bet that this has not been re-connected properly after some work was done on the car.
 
I have to disagree about the way the P38 window switch pack is lit. Its lit with one bulb that has a sort of plastic octopus around it to bring the light to each switch. The side mirror adjustment part is not lit up at all.

Hi Guys ,I have just had the switch panel in the centre consol out and the bulb is good ,but there only to be 4.6 volts at the connector for the lamp and at the connector for the whole switch panel .
Iam prosuming it should 12volts cos the bulb is 12volts 2watts ,can anybody point me to ware to look next .

First of all, do you have the lighting dimmed for the instruments at all?? This is the first reason I would think would cause a lower than normal voltage.

This thread finally made me sort my bulb out this afternoon when I got home. I would turn my lights on and nothing would light on the window switch pack, I had to give it several hard taps with my hand before it would light.

First of all, I had the switch pack totally out and removed the bulb. It looked fine so I lifted the little metal prongs on the bulb to try and make better contact with the holder. Still it didn't work so I rechecked the bulb and took the green rubber cover off to see the bulb more clearly and still it looked fine.

The bulb looked the same as one of the bulbs the instrument pack uses so knowing I had a few of those spare and lying around in the house I went in and grabbed one along with my voltage tester. I put one of the spare bulbs I had in and it now works perfectly, put it all back toghether and everything is now fine. I didn't end up testing the voltage though, sorry :(

As said, the bulb is 12v 2watts. The bulb I put in was meant for the instrument pack so is only 1.2watts. So, at some point I guess I will replace it with the proper wattage one but I cant seem to find the part number for the correct bulb.

So, even if the bulb looks fine it might not be.

Well ,I have found the dimmer switch tonite and also tested the switch panel at work and the the panel seems to be working fine ,I got 12v on the the panel and the bulb works fine ,so I put the panel back on the car tonite and nothing the bulb will not light ,all the windows work to its just the panel does not not illuminate so there is no 12volts coming from the plug which connects to the back of the switch panel .
Where would the 12volts come from to get to that plug? Cheers .

Have you actually tested the panel plugged into the vehicle?? Plug it in and then test how many volts are at the connector for the lightbulb.

If none then unplug the switch pack and check the connector for voltage at pins 5 & 6 (6 being ground). According to the ETM for a 96 model P38 this is where the voltage for the bulb comes from.

Obviously, make sure the ignition is on to at least the first stage (radio on etc) and that at least the side lights are on and you should see some sort of voltage there, if not the problem is somewhere else.

If there is voltage there is probably a dry joint or burnt track on the window switch pack.

Hi ,Thanks for the reply ,I tried the very thing you are talking about ,testing the voltage at the plug which plugs into the switch panel ,did this at the weekend and the voltage was 4.6 volts.
Just to say that all the windows/mirrors work fine ie up/down it is just no illumination.

so 4.6 volts when measuring between pins 5 & 6??

Does the bulb that lights up the front ashtray and cigar lighter work ok?? Is that bright or dull or not on at all when the rest of the lights are on??
