Just to make sure we are on the same wave length ,the front ash tray and cigar lighter that sits between the gear lever and the dual climite control (its the only ash tray I can see in the front ) if so there is no light on at all when the rest of the dash lights are on . Thanks again.

Yes, thats the one. Next thing to do is check whether the ash tray light connector is getting any voltage when the lights are on. I should think you will find its getting 4.6 volts like the window switch pack.

To make sure though, take the ash tray out, to do this, remove the window switch pack, or, just unscrew it, tilt it forward and out of the way and then remove the large screw thats exposed at the bottom of the wood trim that goes round the gear shifter. You can then lift the whole gear shift surround up and this will bring the ashtray and cigar lighter with it. Disconnect the T shaped plug for the cigar lighter and the single I shaped plug for the bulb. Make sure the bulb is ok, if not, renew and then try again.

If the bulb is ok, get your voltage tester and see what the voltage to that plug is. you can use the ground wire the cigar lighter as the ground as thats what the bulb uses anyway. So red probe on the single plug for the light and then black probe on the connector for the cigar lighter, make sure it touches the pin thats got the black wire going to it and NOT the green.

Post back with your results - good luck :)

Wills, Just had a look and the bulb in the ash tray is good ,there is 12volts on the cigar lighter BUT no power on the lead to the ash tray bulb.

Cheers.

ok, so, just to be absolutely super sure, you checked the connector labeled number 2 in this photo with the lights turned on and you grounded the connection to the black wire on the cigar lighter connector and you read absolutely 0 volts?? (ignore the random number 2 and the messy state of my Range Rover, this photo was taken just after I got it and I was fitting a speed camera detector, its now all clean :D)

In that case looking at the electronic troubleshooting manual I would suggest theres a fault somewhere along the wire, possibly at S612 which is a 'wire-to-wire' splice.

The diagram below shows what I am on about. Have you had any trouble with the gear shifter lighting or anything as that aspect of the lighting is on the same circuit as well as you can see below.

The next thing I would do is to check you are getting 12 volts out of the BeCM. You will most likely need to remove the drivers seat to do this. You will then need to check pin 11 on connector C625 on the side of the BeCM - the side of the BeCM closest to the centre of the vehicle.

The wire that comes from pin 11 is RED and BLUE. When checking the voltage ground the voltage tester at earth point E621 as shown in the photo at the very bottom - this is where the circuit is earthed in the end, not only that it will be right next to you and within easy reach.

DO NOT unplug the connector with any sort of ignition on. You dont want to risk upsetting anything.

If it was me testing I would turn the ignition on to stage I after removing the front seat. I would then turn the side lights on and slot my positive probe into pin 11 of the connector, this should be enough to make contact with the actual metal pin itself. If you cant reach the metal pin with your normal tester, turn everything off and remove the key and slot a straightened paper clip into the connector making sure its touching nothing else but the metal pin and then try again using the paper clip as the point to test voltage - Ive used this technique several times and its always worked perfectly. I then would just ground the connection at the earth point I mentioned earlier.

This view is of the connector as though it was plugged into the BeCM. So when you come to test, pin 11 is along the bottom towards the front of the vehicle.

Im hoping with the lights on you should find 12 volts coming from the BeCM. In which case you will know you have a problem somewhere along the wiring to contend with. If its not 12 volts there maybe something more serious to contend with. I would try the above test before anything else though. Sorry for the long rambling post as well, just trying to make sure everything is fully understood and you dont end up hurting yourself/blowing up your Range Rover/setting fire to next doors dog etc etc :D

Good luck and post back with results.

Hi Wills , I have just checked for 12 volts on connector C625 pin 11 and there is NO 12VOLTS on the BECM.

Thanks ,Waiting for answer holding breath!!

hmmm, the ignition was on to the first stage (key in, turn until the first notch) and the lights were on?? As you got 0 volts at pin 11 did you then go back to check to see how many volts you were getting at the window switch pack connectors??

I just went outside a few minutes ago and took my switch pack apart and checked how many volts I was getting at the bulb. I have 12 volts at my bulb.

So, I would go back and check how many volts are at the window switch pack again. If you still have 4.6 volts then there must be some sort of voltage from that pin on the BeCM unless you have some sort or short circuit.

Are you completely sure you managed to test the right pin (not being rude, just want to make sure you got exactly the right one)??

Right ,I have thrown in the towel on this one ,the car is going in to a Land Rover specialist on Saturday morning ,hate to be beatin on this type of thing but its doing my head in so it has to be done

Many thanks to those who gave advise on this in the past.

just searched out this thread, my switches all work but doesnt light up, the bulb looks ok but so did ones i took from my beamer dash the same, got soem in the garage just going to nip down now and grab one, hope they are the same volts

bought a new bulb but didnt light up, but im presuming coz its day light is there a sensor for all the dash lights ? il see what happens later when its dark

So does the mirror toggle switch light up then or not? from the link above pic two does not show that it would anyone know any different??
