It has a little gas strut. I assume its supposed to open on its own when you press the button? Mine doesn't. Can you get the gas strut anywhere?

It's just a little thing, but if its a cheap fix I'll do it coz it's bugging me...

tnx

Nik

You know that is a good Q....

Is it there to lift it once the button os open - Keep it open against Gravity ala Tailgate/bonnet struts - soft close so it doesn't slam ????

None of mine ever worked in any of the above respects...anyone any idea what it actually does??

Just ordered one from Island 4x4 for £15 (plus postage) so I'll let you know when I've fitted it!! :)

P38 spares sell them too thought about changing mine but my fingers still work so until I can't lift lid I'll leave it !

The cubby lid is not that light and as the cup holder version spins round in its spin it forwards while lifting it up fashion, the gas strut lifts a bit but mostly it dampens the whole spinning lifting action.
Theyre sort ofeasy to replace, one ends awkward though its rivetted and that needs drilling out and access isnt brilliant

I've got to find one of those with the cup-holders! Mine just flips up. Well, I say flips. Mine unclips and then I stick a fingernail in there and prise it upright!

Top chap Nik - plus video too....

Always wondered as mine never worked...!!!

Mine is exactly the same. I don't have a single cup holder in my P38. Makes long drives a nightmare. At best I wedge a bottle of drink in the door card. But the cupholders can be had for about £30 notes on the Bay, so might have to go on a spending spree.

I've got a couple off holders dome shape mould/screw to dash/centre console ill it pics on in t' morning.

Might have a spare cup holder for the centre console if you are interested:)

Here you go, you asked, so this is what it's supposed to behave like :)

thats pretty cool, mines never worked, you have to manualy flip it round, tbh i had no idea and thought thats just how they were

ordering one up  thanks

how easy/hard was it to fit/replace ?

ie in reference to...

It took me 10 mins last night after work. A dremel (or similar) was all that was required. The top rivet(?) pops off with some pliers and then clips back on later. The bottom rivet needs drilling out or grinding off and replacing with a small nut and bolt or split pin.

HTH, Nik
