I've seen articles mentioning the center diff lock on early D2s is already fitted, and that the operating leaver is not fitted as standard, but can be retro fitted. Is this correct?

My car is a 2001 TD5 D2. I have in the center consul, the gear leaver and the Hi-Lo range changer. Where if added would the center diff lock leaver go (any photos?), and is it likely that my car would have the CD in place?

The 2001 is quite unlikely to have the TB internals, the CDL linkage is together with the hi-low setup on the same lever where it's fitted and then the lever moves toward left side for that, if you want to see if the TB has the CDL internals reach above the front propshaft and see if it has the spigot pointed with red, if no spigot no CDL

As the previous members have already said, the first thing to check is whether or not the internals are in the transfer box, unless they are there it's pointless going any further and that involves getting under the vehicle (take all safety precautions, axle stands, chock the wheels, better still get somebody else to check for you). You won't be able to actually see the spigot but you will be able to feel it if it's present.
If the spigot is there and you do decide to proceed, you should find plenty of information on how to do the job on the interweb. Although Ashcroft, a well known transmission company say they're out of stock for the lever, their webpage does have a good set of written instructions:-

The part number of the lever assembly is DA1178 and the cost for a new one is something between £300 and £350 depending on where you get it.
