Hi Folks,

I have a quick question for you please..

I think my CCU has gone AWOL, the back window winds down but if I then wind it up (say half way) it drops to the bottom again, it does not matter how far I move it up, it just drops to the bottom again, the only exception to this is when I wind it right to the top so it stops.

Another symptom is that it randomly winds down - middle of the night / day once or twice every week, so can not leave it unattended anywhere...
The last time it did this was when we had the really bad rain, and was down for around 7 hours, needless to say the boot is full of water now..

(I have now pulled the fuse to stop this, but can not get in the boot anymore)

I suspect that it is the CCU that is not playing, now here is the real question : is the CCU model specific? or will any CCU from a FL1 do?

Are there different CCU's for different models? as some models have more equipment than others?

One last thing while I am here, I understand that it does the alarm too so, is it advisable to get a CCU with a fob, then recode my existing fob to the new CCU??

Thats a big jump changing your CCU just because of the rear window, or are there other symptoms? i had the window issue a while ago whilst changing fob batteries ( i put it down to the batteries, whether it was or not i don't know), but the window just had a mind of its own . i disconnected the battery , basically because it was raining and the back was getting wet, but the point is once i re-connected it 10 months on it hasn't malfunctioned once. worth a try.
 
The first behaviour you mention of it lowering itself if you raise it but not all the way to the top is the normal behaviour. I dunno why, think I was told once, but seems stoopid to me.

As said above, the window randomly opening has been discussed before, you might like to have a search to find threads about it and solutions. @ETHANS2 solution of disconnecting the battery (for 20 minutes) has also fixed a problem with my CCU - wasn't related to rear window, it was immobilised - but it was confused none the less - and in my case was initiated by a failing starter motor causing electrical disturbance.

As stated, different models have different dependencies, but you really don't want to be changing CCUs if you can help it - they may be coded to the engine ECU, so may need to swap a matching pair, then as you say coded to fobs etc - PITA job to change.

That's normal. You should be able to stop the window at any point if you're winding it down from the top. But winding it up partially from the bottom will result in the window dropping again, when the button is released.

This can happen, but I'm not sure that the reason has been determined. My own SE has done this very thing twice over a 4 year period.

It's unusual for a CCU to fail, so suspect that's not the issue. Do you know that the rear window will drop, if the unlock button on the fob is held pressed for more than 3 seconds.
One last thing while I am here, I understand that it does the alarm too so, is it advisable to get a CCU with a fob, then recode my existing fob to the new CCU??
The CCU is used to control the locking, amongst other things, so replacement would need to have the fobs, and be from the same model/ year.
What kind of car is it?
Only the Freelander 1 has a power rear door glass. ;)

In response, I can add the following..

I can rule out the fob button being pressed as this happens when I am asleep and my keys are on the table, so sure that no buttons are being pressed..

Batteries, I have changed the fob battery for a brand new one, and I have also changes the main battery, leaving it a good half an hour before attaching the new main battery.

I did have an occasion as well where I came out one morning and the doors were unlocked - However I can not bee 100% it was me not locking, but it is very unusual for me to do that..

I looked at the schematics for the CCU and noticed that it controls the rear window as well as the locking, so you can see where I am going can't you.


I am in the situation where I can not leave my car unattended, I drive part way to work and cycle the rest, so could be leaving it opened for no-gooders potentially all day - I have no idea how that would go in an insurance claim, if it gets robbed.

Incidentally, when the rear window is down, the doors are still locked most of the time...

So much for Land Rovers "Super secure" feature mentioned in the handbook o_O

That is one of the most stupidest "features" I have ever seen ;)

Yes. However the door locking and rear window are completely separate control systems in the CCU. So having both open at the same time would be very strange.
Incidentally, when the rear window is down, the doors are still locked most of the time..
That's the way it happens, due to the system design.

That refers to the immobiliser and dreadlocks. You can't actually unlock the car from the inside once it's looked with the remote.

If you want to disable the rear window motor, then it can be done. You'll need a 4 pin car relay and some wire. You need to break into the rear window motor feed wire, polarity doesn't matter. You then link the cut ends to the relay contractor terminals. The relay needs to be grounded to the body on one coil terminal. The other coil terminal needs to go to the ignition feed, say the accessory output to the radio.

Doing this modification will stop the window motor from working, while the ignition is turned off. However it will also stop the window from dropping, should you want to open the boot, unless you put the key in the ignition and turn it to the accessory position first.

It's a way to make the vehicle much more secure, although adds a degree of inconvenience too.

Well you should give your mutt more attention then and he wouldn't be so troublesome :D

The window winding down is the automatic behaviour when power is reapplied to the CCU - eg after changing the battery. Do you have any aftermarket add-ons that might be cutting power (even only momentarily) to the car's power?

That's a good suggestion to work round the problem.
 
My experience of failed ccu is loads of things fail never just one. When my window dropped I found a wire rubbed through and shorting occasionally in the tailgate itself
 
Ok thanks for all the info, I guess it is back to the rear door as a first port of call.. check and clean the sensors, and the wiring as when I got the car the rear window would wind all the way down bar the last 2 inches... had the card off and notice it was snagging on the vertical wire harness holders, they are now gone as they were stressed, and taped to the rear door...

One thing I did try was to test the CCU, by using the fog light and ignition on and off, but never got an acknowledgement response from it... hmm
 
OK folks, I have cracked it!

I started to inspect the wiring from the rear tailgate to the front fuse box. Removed the rear right interior panel in the boot and guess what? Near the rear seats underneath the holder for the parcel shelf, I discovered two relays - later found one is for the rear window, replaced them both, and they presto! Left if for a month now and no phantom winding down !

I hope this helps someone..
 
I've just had a similar problem after disconnecting the battery. Window went down, would wind back up but then drop straight back down again. Since I bought the car the back window never went all the way down, stayed up about 4 inches. It also made a grinding noise as it was lowered.

Took door card off and could see it was getting stuck against the cables on the door skin. I took the regulator out and in doing so noticed the bottom 2 securing bolts are adjustable and we're wound out quite a bit.

I cleaned everything up, wound the adjusting bolts right the way back in and put the regulator back in. Worked perfect, window no longer catching the cables and now drops completely out of sight when wound down and without the grinding noise.

When I first got my FL the window would not go all the way down either (about 2 inches from the bottom), upon inspection, it turned out to be catching on the cable tidy on the door and stressed it so it would always bent outwards, so the window would always catch on it..

The issue above is different, once the window was no longer interfered with, and went all the way down and calibrated, I found that the window would just wind down by itself, but only once every one and half weeks or so - very intermittent, and annoying as I could not leave the car unattended..

Changing those two relays solved this, and not had it happen for a couple of months now..

On to the next thing on the list now.. :)
