anybody no the best place to mount a cb radio in a disco pros/cons and the ariel mount and the best type of rig and twig that people have had experience with any advice welcome thanks colin:)

probably on the right hand side of the stearing would be a great place to mount them.

Only con I can name is they are illegal to use whilst you're driving (police will get awfully upset if they catch you although they can use thier radio's)

Don't know anything about ariels magnetic mounts are ok.

I would suggest mounting the unit on the transmission tunnel. This where my defender's cb unit is mounted and it causes no probs yet is easily in reach for channel changes etc. Have to admit that I don't have a unit in my disco, YET...

It's not Illegal to use a hand held mic for radios while on the move, just mobile phones.
I've thought about mounting it either on the roof liner or on the back of the centre console

mine's mounted on the map shelf thing above my head and to the right.. like this:

A good place to mount a cb radio especially if you want to be able to remove it for security reasons is to mount the bracket under the small rubber mat in the centre of the dashtop just in front of the small radio vent, first reason is that you can just screw the mount in and out in two minutes and just replace the mat to cover the holes and secondly you can run the wires down through the vent and into the stereo cavity keeping things tidy plus of course this will put the unit in your line of sight.
 
Two good ideas, just have to make sure when it's above the vent that you don't have the heat on- or you'll fry the radio.

When I get the roof rack, I'll be putting 2 HF whips for 20 and 40 meters on the back left/right roof top. Using DV type 3/8 stud mounts drilled into the the body.

One 2M/70cm's Dual Band whip on the Drivers side and CB whip on the other side just behind the lights on the roof rack.
The Cb is going to be mounted on the back of the centre box or underneath the sun visor.

Need to buy a new rig so I can have both VHF/UHF in one box- something like the Yaesu FT-7800 or FT-8800- to be mounted either on the dash top or on the air vent grill "I'm sure these rigs have detachable fronts!!!"

As for the 20/40M's either stick with my Icom IC-725 or buy a Yaesu FT-857 or Icom IC-706 MkII G
The 857 and 706 both have removeable fronts for ease of mounting..

I managed to source a bracket that clamps to the roof bars, leading the cable through the door seal.
radio is mounted in the dash top-centre (as above) so is easily removable but very handy. because this mounting covers up the speaker I've mounted a small extension speaker to the drivers side of the console with just two screws and modded the bracket so it easily slides on and off to remove all sign of a radio being fitted (apart from the two small screw heads).
Currently using a Albrecht 6690 multi-channel.
 
There is also the problem of the radios being on display, don't want to get them nicked or the wagon- But having all these aerials on top won't help!! Some of them are over 6ft high!!!!!

I don't really want to run the Coax through a door, can get damaged and pretty bad if your running a 100W down it too.
Just have to wait and see.

my two arieals are on the bumper, linked up so they work together, cb's on trans tunnel, been there ages and not been nicked yet in either disco. yet! coax does go thru door but its not that bad cos the seals quite thick

Lol i think the era of nicking cb radios went with funny hair an dodgy clothes in the eighties lmao, However i see the callsigns and i thought that now you can get ham radios with detachable fronts like car stereos???
 
got mine up in the roof..
I ditched the sunroof winder handle in favor of the CB, I've never used the sunroof anyway
 
Mine's on the tunnel, with aerial cablr routed back along it, under mats and out drivers door. Works well 'cos the door seal is thick and doesn't ... ;)

Aerial's a large mag mount on middle of roof ... been pulled off once, but that was an un-planned exit through a hedge. :rolly:

i tried mine there too but as i sit close to the wheel kept banging my head on it. so i loosened the map shelfy thing and fitted between it and the roof (where u got ur wire tucked in) and retightened. does the job just fine

See I might do that, not have them with a phasing cable but two seperate aerials and rigs. Keeps the height down from the over head power lines.

Only problem is there ain't a lot of ground plane for it to work well

power lines? from what, electric fences? tram lines are too high up unless you have a 10 footer on top of the landy

no ground plane? what more do you want? Bumper----->chassis.....> whole body?

When you have an aerial for 20 and 40 Meters "7.0 and 14MHz" they can be quite large in length. And looking at some of the power cables around here look quite low!!! Good idea about the Tram lines, could power an electric motor and save on the juice...lol

And the Ground Plane would be directed to the back of the vehicle instead of being omnidirectional, but it's always a comprimise with radio gear.. even more so with HF:p
