Whats up with all the necros recently? :confused:

Just to add both my 02 90 & 04 110 both passed MOTs at various garages some landy friendly some not. Not a mention or a peep about the cat missing. However new rules in Oct we shall see... luckily still got me cat and EGR incase.

and this will be for all vehicles I fear - noticed that the road legal plant we have now has particle filters on! Regarding the new MOT many will catch a cold as most one man and van guys do remove the cats to increase efficiency - especially when the original gives any sign of trouble! I fear that in a few years we will have a very different forum!

I wouldnt worry to much if it fails refit it then retest.
But I reckon in the next 5/10 years even mentioning you have removed the doc cat will get the same disapproving looks that smokers get nowadays!
 
Sort of related, looking into EGR blank and have researched for a while seems to be a grey area. Is it illegal on a 54 plate 90... or will it definitely fail it’s MOT?

if the mot tester sees youve blanked ur egr it will fail

how ever many are simply hiding a blanking plate so the mot tester can’t see it, but the other guys will be able to tell u what’s the best thing on the TD5

Thank you for the info, as my MOT test is still around 9 months away and it seems a simple job I guess I could fit now and remove in time for test
 
New rules MOT draft copy see new rule, section 8.2.2.1 re missing equipment fitted by manufacturer.

Its a pretty safe bet that eu 3 emmissions and above cars and probably EU 2 will have a cat and it also applies to EGR systems which both have and if missing the new rules indicate it will be an MOT fail.
Lots of owners will be searching their garages and boxes now to refit them if they kept them. Mine is a 2004 TD5 and with both a cat and egr systems.

Even before the new rules MOTs required a cat to be fitted if fitted from factory.

Some Defenders came with cats some didnt, even TD5s.
 
Yep, my 99 td5 hasn't got a cat and has passed all previous mots, including one a few weeks ago.
I've left my egr valve in place, but have sandwiched a thin ally plate inbetween the exhaust manifold and the egr take off pipe (i cut the ally to the same shape as the end of exhaust maifold so you'd really have to take a close look to notice it), just to stop the warm crap air getting into the inlet. No worries so far! :)
 
My MOT isnt till Oct but ive removed 95% of the EGR system, only thing left is the oil cooler hose.

May have to refit the solenoids...

Luckily still have the acoustic cover
 
My insurance is due 1st April, so looking in to it tonight. I've not informed my insurance company about removing the EGR since I did it earlier this year. Keep meaning to and then forgetting. Anyway, with the new insurance I'm thinking I'll call the insurance company and talk about the EGR. It's crossed my mind that they will surely know that you are not allowed to remove the EGR anymore (that might be from May this year if it's not already) So, does this mean we'll have to have them on or risk being captured, in an inspection after an incident, and risk not being insured! I suppose the same could apply to the CAT/DPF? :confused:
 
Hey all again, so looking at this and reading more online it looks like luck of the draw on the MOT front. However, I keep find myself watching videos of some pretty incredible sounding TD5's. Does anyone know if I kept the CAT and simply removed massive centre silencer and replaced with straight pipe mid-section I'd make any difference to exhaust note?

Unfortunately on disco 2 the vin had either a 8 or 9 in the number denoting if it came with a cat fitted from factory, let's hope mot testers don't use this fact.
