Dont know if this is the right place to put this --but Halfords is selling Castrol oil at a decent discount--been this morning and bought myself 4 x4 litres----Dave

Halfords own brand is castrol anyway so you have wasted your money on a sticker!!
Have always used castrol oils on my motors-over 40 yrs, never heard any bad comments about their products, maybe someone will put me right about that!

Don't think you understand halfords own brand oil is made by castrol but in a halfords bottle and costs less!!
AND IS THE SAME OIL

Because halfords oil is the same stuff!!
And you have a ****ing tractor engine that does not require expensive oil.

Also if you go to a motor factors it's cheaper than that.
Oil is oil.
If cheap oil nackered your engine they wouldn't be able to sell it!!
When I say cheap I still mean buy the right oil not just stick anything in the sump

Ok I have said this before and I have no connection with nor would recommend any other services by them but Kwikfit do an oil and filter change on a Freelander TD4 for £34 inc Vat - they use Mobil 3000 fully synthetic - this us drive in drive out and the TD4 takes 6 litres! They even take off the belly pan for this. You cannot buy good oil and a filter for this!

Not going into the 'who makes what' argument but I have always found Costco the cheapest for Castrol oils. I do oil & filter changes every 6-months on the Freelander & 90 so I get through quite a bit but I always consider it worth it.

Castrol Edge Synthetic (TD4 Freelander) £23.02 / 4L.
Castrol Magnatec Semi-Synthetic (300TDi 90) £14.39 / 4L.

I like to change my own oil gives me a chance to have a look around underneath the car and also to check the condition of the oil comming out. I used 7L of Castrol edge on the last change bought from Halfords while on a previous special offer.
Don't Coscos require a trade card to shop there?
Is it really worth while using fully synthetic oil ?

I agree entirely on the above reason for wanting to do the work myself, I use the service interval as a chance to have a really good look at the underside and it is also for that reason that I remove the undertray (easy job) rather than just cutting a hole and draining the oil that way.

Costco does require membership (£25 per year for husband & wife) but the discounts more than cover this money, indeed you can save that money in your first shop (depending on what you are buying of course) so you are onto a winner for the remainder of the year.

Is fully synthetic oil required and does it really need to be replaced every 6-months?
Probably not on both counts but it isn't expensive (£35 per change) and while I am doing the work I would rather use the best oil available to me.

Castrol magnatec has been the source of much controversy in the past. It seems that one of the other big oil companies disputed that it was a true semi synthetic oil and was really just a mineral oil with a small additive. After a court case it seems the wording was changed to read "part synthetic". Im not saying its a bad oil but you could buy better for less money.

Remember this :

Castrol (and all the others) does NOT exist to supply you with good oil.

Castrol exists ONLY to make as much profit as possible for the people who own the Castrol Oil company.

The question then becomes HOW can Castrol make as much profit as possible?

The answer is simple - spend as little as possible making the product, and charge as much as possible for selling it.

So who PAYS for Castrol's profits?

Not me anyway, because I use Tractor Universal in ALL my engines.
My TD5 Disco is over 90,000 miles on it, runs like a sweetie, and the insides of the engine are the cleanest I think I have ever seen in an engine with some miles on it.

I've bought 8 litres of half price Magnatec for my BMW but it's the fully synthetic 5W30. I'd never use part synthetic in a modern engine. :)
