I'm helping a mate with his 2000 D2 AUTO.
He has a strange issue (aside from being a Disco owner!)
The car starts and idles ok, still in park, when he presses the brake pedal all the electrics die and the engine stops.
Restarts the car the same happens, but not always!
I'm thinking it could be something to do with an inhibit switch in the auto box.
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks

Start the car in neutral and see if the same thing happens.
Start it with the handbrake on, no foot on the brake. Put it into D, release the handbrake and drive off. Then brake. If the engine dies...

It behaves as if it could be the brake switch which controls the brake lights and connects to the ECU for the cruise control, but somehow I don't think so, as I don't think that would make the engine cut out.
More likely there is a wire close to the brake pedal that is shorting to earth through the pedal, possibly the wire from second position on the ignition switch. So I'd have a really good look under the column and trace the loom/wires down from the switch to the end where it plugs in to something else. You may well find there is a short that occurs when the brake pedal touches this. Should be an easy fix if this is the problem.
If not get back to us.

On which engine? Sounds like a vacuum leak due to the stalling/dying while braking but could be electrical.

Hi All, sorry for the late update.
My mate has yet to look into it further, he's catching up after Xmas break!
I'll chase him up, but he's not too up on technical stuff, so ill probably do the checks myself in a couple of weeks.

Did you ever figure out the problem? I am having the same problem. Just happened over night.
Did you solve your problem. If not il bet a dime to a dollar that its the brake pedal switch which is defective. It shorts out when pedal depressed causing the switch to activate and shorts out .You need part number xkb100170 brake pedal switch ..Cheers
