Now i know for a fact that i'm going to the **** ripped from me big style for this but i will take it like a man......
Just been checking under the beasty before it takes us on our jolly's and i've noticed a gap in the mechanicals.
The front propsahft is missing.....it is no more.....it is deceased.
Now before you all start taking the **** i need to know why the prop would be removed. It's not fallen off coz the bolts are still on the transfer box end and there's no damage to either flange.
Soooooooo my question is this...are the props taken off to cure faults or to help economy or is this just a case of a thieving scroat who needed a prop??
Bear in mind the car was a cat d insurance loss so may have stood in a salvage yard for a while.

Too tight to fix UJ's ... I ran without a front prop for a day, when it was too wet to fix the thing.

I'd guess that someone's removed them to make it into a 2wd, because they think it'll be cheaper to run, especially if they don't go offroad. But if I were going to do it for that reason I'd also remove the diff and half-shafts as they'd still be masses to turn, so not much inprovement in economy. Might be worth checking that the diff isn't blown, which could be another reason to remove the prop ... but you'd need a front prop to do that ... ;)

Ok....how would i tell a blown diff??? can't see it smiling or lighting a cigarette...oh see what you mean.:eek:
 
I got 2 spare good props fer a depender 90 if that's any elp.
dunno if they're the same?
is yours a classic?

Sounds like it may have had a flat/bent rim on it and the front prop was removed so it could be rear ended from the scene of the accident on a spec lift.;)
 
Its possible that the viscous coupling in the transfer box is siezed. I ran my 91vogue like this for approx 6 months with no problems. Hope this helps.
 
UPDATE AND NEW PROB :mad:
Got a prop and fitted it just before the snow hit.:)
Now the thing pulls great and has not got stuck once so i'm assuming the 4x4 side is working but now i've got a transmission whine!!
Its def not a wheel bearing sound..more like a diff whine.
What i need to know is there any way to determine whether it's the diff or the transfer box thats whinging??
If it's the diff is there anywhere that sells recon bits,just the moving centre diff bits without the casing??
Failing that can i rebuild it?? Been spannering for last 20 years but never rebuilt a diff.

Maybe my turn to have the **** ripped as I'm no expert in this at all but......

With the front prop removed, wouldn't the transfer box have to be in lock mode? When you put the new front prop on, did you take it out of diff lock?

If not, then maybe you're winding the centre diff up.

Earmuffs are on ready for the shouting that these posh motors don't do centre diffs or are automatic or something :behindsofa:

if not , that would suggest to me, that it is not the diff

Noise wasn't there before prop went on but i would have thought the transfer box would still be turning the output flange even without a prop....could be wrong:doh:
