iseen one on ebay.. it might have bin ebay.fr but i defo seen on. shaft and the pto bit fer the g/box

cheers slob just had a look on ebay there is a drum winch with PTO, but im after the propshaft/driveshaft that fits to the crank pully

mmm got me puzzled now slob, not having seen a capstan winch close up before i thought the driveshaft would go in the hand cranking dog on crank pulley the pic attached shows the shaft with a pin through whcih looks like it might mate with pully have i got it tottaly wrong

if you use the starting handle once the engine fires it gonna throw the handle out of mesh with the dog.
otherwise it would rip yer arm off so i don't suppose the bit on yer shaft would stay in mesh for any length of time either

no slob, the capstan fits in yer starting handle dog, its held there under the pressure of the linkage rod, to release the rope you just release the drive shaft from the starting dog and pull on the rope. a capstan only rotates one way

aye it do but the starter dog has got a slope on it to push the handel away int it? so it would push yer shaft away as well. which is why they have a dog clutch on the end of the crank.... unless there are two types one of which i int seen

aye but the only reasion itr pushes it away is cos the int no pressure to hold it there, on the capstan the drive shaft is fitted onto the bottom of the mounting plate and there is a lever to engage/disengage it

if yer look on his pic you can see the dog on the end of the shaft that fits into the starter handle dog

well its different to ones ah used to use then.. cos they had a dog clutch yer had to engage afore it would do owt. ah still dint see how that sloppy bit is gonna be much good fer driving owt

fook knows but they do werk well, i used ter have one on a 109, i wish id took the fooker off when i sold it

i used to have one on the recovery S2 88 i drove in the '70's, it could pull anything out of the ditches around these parts whereas the superwinch that was on the S3 88 that replaced it wuz ****e, forever havin problems with the clutch and solenoids, in the end the superwinch was dumped and the capstan was put on.

You are right Slob, the capstan winch has a different dog in the crank shaft. With the winch fitted you can not use the handle so it gettig stuck is no problem

Landrovergod

but it fits in the starting handle end of the crankshaft, not off a pto
but yer can't? the starting handle fits in the dog against a straight edge that is parrelle to the crankshaft . when yer turn the starting handle it pushed against this flat straight bit.

when the engine fires up, the crank is turning quicker than you can turn the handle so the 'dog' has a sloping side to it, opposite the straight bit.

when the engine is going faster than the handle it pushes the handle out of the dog. without it your arm would get ripped off when it fired up.

so your winch shaft would be pushed out as well unless you had a different dog on the crank. one with two straight sides.. which would allow the crank to turn the shaft and therefore the winch.

even with a spring in place it would still be thrown out.

aye im with yer now, there must be either an adaptor or a different dog on the end of the crank. like i say it were a long time ago and i cant remember that well
