My last td5 would do the '3rd gear' only thing occasionally, I would just turn it off and lock and unlock it and more often than not it worked, I never investigated it :)
The third gear thing can also be a symptom of the waste gate actuator showing a fault. In my case the nuts had come of the actuator diaphragm so it was just moving whenever the wastegate rod moved, which conned the ECM into an overfuelling situation which it corrected by putting it into limp home mode.
This last sentence may not be fully accurate so please forgive me!!
But it can be a good idea to make sure the wastegate moves freely and all connections to the diaphragm/actuatorare OK.
 
Well, everything appears to be working properly again. Lucky really because I've got a new job and I'll have to go into town a lot more. Unfortunately this means it's time to part with the D2 and replace with something that looks a bit less redneck.
