Hey fellas,

Pretty sure the 1.8 in my Hippo is a no-hoper, 8 owners in 9 years and now I'm still getting eggsauce gas in the heater and I'ms till loosing a bit of coolant, there's really nothing more I can do. Head was done properly 3k ago. I know it's been done at least once before, but very badly last time.

I'm starting to think that this may have just been a **** engine from day 1, bad even for a K series (though DD's is on 97k and still with its original gasket.)

So I'm considering two options, A: Get it as good as I can and sell up, might get 2800 for it as it's in stunning condition otherwise, or B: drop a low mileage rover lump in there that hasn't had HGF.

If I go with B, can I make any money back from the metal in the old engine? What would I have to do to prepare it for scrap to maximise the value of the parts?

If I even stick with LR's it'll be a young D1 or old D2. It's a damned shame as I loved that hippo up to xmas, but since then I've been less able to see everything through a rose tinted welding mask and I'm quickly falling out of love with it :(.

Sell bits off the engine like power steering pump, alternator, starter motor silly small things sell like dip stick and scrap the rest

Will probably need the ancilliaries for the next engine but you neer know :). Cheers mate!

just a thought here, but has anyone done a succesful engine transplant into a hippo from another make,
not including a rover group vehicle.
there must be lots of, dare I say it, "good" diesel/petrol motors fron japan/malysia going to the scrappies now, and with the wisdom of LZ,
someone must be able to knock up adaptor plates for foriegn onto hippo bellhousing..

The trouble is keeping the 4wd system, lots of people talked about it in the past but no one has done it yet. I did my bit with the EWP, I can't throw speculative money around with an engine conversion :(.

If you want you can split the engine down into the main parts, the steel and the alloy.

Steel is about 12p a kilo and Alloy around 70p a kilo

Sorry mate only just saw it! I have no idea what any of it is worth yet - but you don't want it unless you is going to melt it down, tis a right lemon ;).

i was thinking of the practice and i could diagnose exactly what the prob was.

i had a spare one but had to sell due to lack of funds:(

this would not be getting refurbed even if it is possible

Sounds sensible mate, you're welcome to wahetever's left :). DD and I planned it out yesterday and if I can get the cash together we think that a turbo hippo would be stonking to drive. Like the V6 but even better on fool than the standard 1.8 if driven sensibly. Not too worried about all the power through the box either as I won't be doing drag starts or rally circuits! It would just be nice not to have to change gear quite so oftern and to be able to change up earlier. It'd also be great if something actually happened when I put my foot down in 5th!!

You get alot of standard ZR's with exploded gearbox's because they is driven by mostly muppets. Conversely there are a few guys on MGRF running 300ft/lb through PG1's in ZT's and ZTT's etc and they have no trouble becuase they are driven as smoooth GT's rather than muppet wagons.

id be up for one o them n all.

Well if it works who knows :). I'm more comfortable about doing it because of the EWP which I'm pretty sure is doing it's damndest to keep this fooking pile of ****e engine from exploding.

Make it into a coffee table and sell it for £150 ;).

Actually that's not a bad idea at all. Not sure how the missus would feel about something like that in the living room but she's pretty open to cool stuff, for all I know she'd want to help out - she's already better with a MIG welder than I am .

is there enough room to dump a bmw engine in there?? as this was the better freelander engine they used

The problems is that the IRD is designed to mate up to the unique Freelander PG1 gearbox on the K series and L series versions - getting any other engine that doesn't use a PG1 with the same bolt pattern on the bell housing into there is a massive endeavour. Tint like a tratter, if only :(. Though maybe it's possible to mate another BMW engine up to a TD4 gearbox? But then if you havea TD4 then why would you want to change it anyway - they are generally reliable and plenty powerful enough.
