I have a 1998 2.0 L XEDI Freelander, this is pre turbo is there anyway I can turn it into a turbo on the cheap?

Hi i am not an expert but would guess that it is expensive....
You would need a different compression ratio for a start.. Non turbo's usuall run higher compression as the turbo models squirt in far more air...At least that is the case for petrol motors...
You could speak to Turbo Technics..

Failing that wait untill the guys on the site that know about these things reply..
For a start you would probably need lower compression ratio pistons, an intercooler and the associated pipework, oil cooler for the turbo and the ecu might have to be changed to take into accout for the extra air boost (turbo control as well).

Might be easier to buy a turbo lump...

Please do not take this for gospel but it might be the case..

All L-series diesels in the Freelander should be turbo charged

What are the first eight letters of your chassis number?

It should read SALLNA(A if 3dr, or B if 5dr) the last letter should be 'B'
 

I'm ashamed to admit it, I know nothing about engines so I'm not even able to look under the bonnet to see if there is a turbo fitted or not as I don't know what they look like or where it would be? I can top up my oil and water etc but that's it. So I do appreciate your help.

I always thought Landrover made a TD4 and just a 2l Diesel and as mine doesn't have the TD4 badge it wasn't a turbo, the other reason for me thinking it doesn't have a turbo as I can feel it kick in and the performance isn't that good, I have a turbo Mondeo 1.8 and I can feel that kick in.

You dont need to disclose your full chassis number, edit the above post.

You caused a bit of confusion with the other members, some people were thinking that the L-series wasnt turbo charged.

Now you know.
 
I have removed my VIN number from the post.

Does this mean my Freelander has a turbo or not, I'm confussed :confused:
 
yes it has a turbo
the TD4 badge designated the later BMW engined ones.
the L series turbo doozel (what you've got) was rather under powered and never had a noticable tubo kick. it's a good strong reliable injun though.
 
Here it is again, in anorak mode!

The L-series was designed in 1992, developed by 'corporate diesel engineering team' from LR and Rover. British in every sense!

It entered production in 1994, costing £30m to bring it to the production stage. It was first used in the Rover 600 shortly after that.

There were 241 completely new changes to the L-series:

To name but a few:

Cast Iron Block with siamese bores

LM25 Alum head, 2 vertical valves per cylinder

Hydraulic tappets, single overhead cam, belt driven.

Garrett GT15 turbo, variable waste control and intercooler

Then came the Hippo in Jan 1998, the L-series had some 40 modifications for the Hippo, relocated turbo and different inlet manifold

Power Output of the L-series:

Freelander..........94bhp @ 4.2k rpm, 154 lb ft torque @ 2k rpm

Rover 620.......... 103.6bhp @ 4.2k rpm, 155lb ft torque @ 2k rpm

Rover 220D/220 SD...84.9bhp @4.2k rpm, no torque figures available

Here comes another dummy post...
To summaries all Freelander Diesel engines are turbo and L series then? Can't you tell I know nothing about engines.
I wrote in my 1st post I have a Freelander 2.0 L XEDI 1998 ( the L was just to say litre as I wasn't aware that there was an engine was called L )
Second question..
Is there away I can improve my engine performance, I have seen various mod chips, magnets etc advertised on the web than increase BHP and lower fuel consumption do these work can you recommend any? Would this warrant a new post on the forum?
 
I'm not after getting 200 BHP nowhere near, I just want to know if there is a smiple way to improve the performance that has been tried and tested at doesn't cost the earth. thanks all the same :)
