Hi Everyone

My TD4 has clocked over 73k and it's about this time LR say that the cam belt should be changed. Has anyone had this done by a non LR garage recently? If yes can you let me know what the cost of this service was. I'm about to try a new local garage and I could do with a price guide so I know I'm not being stitched.

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Hello smokejack!
The cam's on yer td4 are driven by simplex chain
so you aint got no belt to change !
So unless yer chains all rattling, dont go there mate!

cheers!

and please excuse my ignorance (as you may have already gathered I know little about mechanics and what I do know is out of date), but does this mean there's nothing I need to do until of course I do happen to hear any rattling? I appreciate your only giving me advice not gospel but at least it's good advice.

I am now (almost) reeling with a profound state of disbelief that my TD4 will now be in it's 3rd consecutive month of a 3 year relationship (yes there's been rows, door slamming, stopping out all night, public humilation, and that's just what the freebie has done to me) without actually costing me anything!!

I'm not going to cry.

Erm! yes-No!
If it aint causing you problems then theres nothing you need to do, Except the usual servicing.I think if the chain dose need replacing on it you should be forwarned by the Mil light on the dash, Via positioning sensors on the cams and the crankshaft and the dreaded puter bit:eek:

So carry on enjoying yer Hippo :D :D :D

So TD4's have got the good old chain method have they? Learn summat new every day! Good to see a lot of diesels are going back to the reliable methods recently. Poor tiny has the lacky band method...Pain in the bum every 80k.

I think I'd prefer a chain given the choice as it's a little stronger. Only downside is the noise compared to belts. We'd all rather the noise than a quiet braking belt ;)

Aint that the truth. Manufacturers seem to be getting their acts together these days and regressing to the chains. For the 3 HP increase and slightly less rattle I have no idea why chains were ditched in the 1st place apart from to grab money every major service.

Id'e rather have neither!
Zeus timing gears,
I now they do em for the Sheep shifter lads !
But suppese you only need em if yer going to the extrems wi modifying
So me bit o chain wi suffice on me hippo

Good diesels (BMW, Mercedes ..) don't go back to reliable methods, they stay with what they know is good.:) :)

Steady on Willo. Tiny may be an old girl but she has seen many a TD4 off. The Hurricane may have been stone age compared to the messerchmitt but it could kick its arse! 152k and counting.....

No, no, no, the dealers just want your money to change Cam Belts. Cam chains will make them no money at service time

Hi tiny,

The least of my thoughts to break off the L-diesel engine, far from that, the guy who took mine on the flatbed when I had my thermostat gone has one himself and he is very very pleased with it as well. What I mean is that the money you pay less for these engines is recuperated with maintenance, the others, like BMW and Mercedes you pay more but as marksurry says there is no aftercosts to it anymore (not for cambelts anyway).
