Just how international is it?

We are currently in Laos and our gearbox is about to give up the ghost, had to tow Cassie for 100km or so upon leaving China and it looks like its finished off our gearbox.

The local main stealer is a complete waste of time so no joy there.

Does anyone have a box preferably without transfer box (to safe cost on transport) that they would be willing to DHL to me?

Currently its an LT77 in a 1991 200TDi defender, believe that an R380 could be fitted but would obviously need the bell housing as well.

Have looked at Ashcrofts but cost would be too high, with shipping and surcharge etc.

Please help, we will be back on line later as there is a 7 hour difference.

Hi Sean, whilst towing Cassie over the mountains there were a couple of occasions when the only way Andrew could stop was to drive into the back of me because his brakes were overheating causing complete loss of pedal, basically my box will select all gears and drive in them all but the noise in second and third is drowning out the radio and all other noises.
It actually sounds like the cogs are touching casing or maybe teeth are missing.
What I really need is another box to throw in, in exchange for money.

Lee thr r380 box will not fit onto your existing set up as the 300 engine sits further forard in the engine bay (was done so that only one box was required for disco or def fitment), so you are needing to replace with a Def lt77
 
Sorry to hear about your problem. Unfortunately shipping to china/laos is going to be a massive cost..have you considered ordering parts and doing a re-build of the box? I know this is time consuming but where you are the labour shouldn't be too much...unless of course you are competent enough to do it yourself.

try John Craddocks, specifically their used section, they've sent all sorts of big parts to some very remote places for me in the past.
 
To Storm, would like to think that I can do the rebuild if needed, problem is not sure what parts are needed until its stripped down and then no other option, at the moment its still going but definately terminal.

To Sean, will contact them to see what they hold.

If you can stop somewhere for a few days, get it stripped down then tnt overnight the parts i'd say thats your best option...i priced a half pallet to northern norway and it was £400..eek...so to china/laos...wow!
 
Lay shaft bearings perhaps, have you considered if you can carry on-destroying the box and getting home may be worth it.
If it sounds like a jet engine screech then it is bearings-prior experience bearing seizes and the shaft turns in inner race (other gearboxes)

Hi Fan man have considered just continuing until complete distruction occurs, only problem with that is then I would have to replace vehicle, and round here that means a Toyota or Hyundai.
There isn't any screeching just metal to metal clatter.

Storm I had a parcel DHL'd here acouple of weeks back, just over £100 weighed about 10kilo and no importation tax here so expecting about £300, still cheaper than a new car.

Ok...well i hope you're right. Off top of head a gb is approx 70kg..its more the dimensions of it that are costly..its got to be on a half pallet, the price varys immensely between a parcel and a pallet as it'd need to be fork-lifted etc..

pdf Land Rover Manuals | Landroverweb.com

I'd suggest a browse through gearbox manual and a quick peak inside via gear selector housing.
See if you can remove damaged/broken part and drive on.
Or you could get creative order a refurb kit when you know what is needed and get local grease monkey to fit.

Whilst we were in Mongolia we helped a couple of bikers make crates for shipping and they were paying about 6dollars a kilo so 70kg would be about 400dollars about £300, I hope
 
As I understand it you haven't lost any gears...so i'd be leaning towards the bearings too..but its all speculation til you get to its guts.

Cheers Fan, Its dark now here, good idea will have a luck tomorrow, haven't pulled the top off one of these, in my day it was the original minis that i worked on.
Will take a look at the link.
 
On a serious note how far are you on your route? and a couple of suggestions

1) Find local to rebuild with bits sent to you
2) Do the local's have scrap yards- you never know
3)remove bits if possible,top up oil or continue journey avoiding gears and use low if needed
4) nice land cruiser lump thrown in
5) get inventive and throw in a van engine and box 2wd. (last resort before leaving it)
 
Will be heading to some friends in Vientiane in a couple of days, hopefully he will let pull the car to bits there and then I will know what to order, looks like a rebuild is on the cards as no-one has as yet offered a replacement. Expect plenty of questions when I get there.

Had considered all but the last 2, we're about half way on our route, so far about 36000 km so still a bit to go.
