Got a second gearbox......not because I need it but because the bellhousing will fit the muncie gearbox and 429 with a simple adaptor. The dowel holes line up on this and the block but the bolt holes don't.

The other issue is the flywheel, this will allow me to use a big block flywheel and full size clutch!

So one gearbox somehow became two when he offered me a french military one for £15.......would have been rude not to take it really :)

Red one weighs a bloody tonne! No idea what its out of he said a French flathead Pont Mousson, some kind of army truck. Dwarfs the R380 landrover box in terms of width and depth anyway, definitely a tough box :D







This is the Zf box as found in Pinzgaurs, Volvo offroad trucks etc and its tiny compared! But it has the all important big block bellhousing :) I'm half tempted to use the Zf box in all honesty but the super low geared muncie is just far better for crawling :D

Bellhousing removed, turns out its a little smaller than I thought! Only 6" deep :D which gives me an overall distance of bellhousing to output flange of 16.7" instead of 17.2"

Only 1/2" loss but every little bit helps go towards the rear prop length :D



 
Might be the angle, actually just measured it again and its 6.25 with its face to the floor

The red gearbox is stamped PMS 702 594
 
french army trucks with the ford flathead v8, been in one. just like a 7.5 ton lorry with 4wd really
 
Well I'm probably going to weigh it in or sell it on ebay.

Will take my £15 back for it as I've got no use for it really. The gears may come in useful for a project though if I strip them out but that seems like a lot of effort.......


Tomorrow I'm gonna make a start on stripping the back end of the muncie which shouldn't be too hard, means I can begin to make up the LT230 adaptor. Will also sketch out the bellhousing pattern on MDF so we can transfer it to the block and get it on the same piece before making a steel adaptor plate. Probably needs to be an inch thick to clear the flywheel properly as thats getting spaced 1/2" back due to the adaptor it needs.

Laser cutter can only do 13mm at a time so will probably just cut a pair of 1/2" pieces out of sheet by hand, drill and tap then weld together using the dowel holes and bolts as a self included jig

Seems the box is very similar to the unimog 404
 
I know what it is ;) its off a french flathead V8 from a Simca SUMB truck

Essentially an ugly unimog with less off road capability, they began production after the occupation of Germany

Only missing a bellhousing on it and didn't crunch as we turned the input and went through the 4 gears but it is just taking up space now. It was made by Pont-a-Mousson and theres not much info on the box as I searched for ages last night
