In your opinion is the AA check a decent check to have on a Landy 90 TD5? i.e do they know what they're doing, landy-wise?

Or am I better looking for a local Land Rover mechanic?

I'm looking for a low milage 2002+ TD5 XS 90.

where are you?
there may be one of the resident eggspurts nearby willing to help in exchange for a pint.

On the TD5 engine check for elevated oil level and diesel in the oil.
This is an expensive fix as it often means a new cylinder head.
These engines dont like to be over heated.
Also check for oil in the ECU plug under the drivers seat.
Not terminal but needs a new ECU wiring harness if oil is present.
It wicks along the loom until it contaminates the ECU circuit board causing misfires and all sorts of strange engine problems.
Other than this check all the normal stuff such as high/low range all working, gearbox not noisy, no funny clunks when braking or accelerating, etc.

Brill cheers!

Elevated on the dip stick you mean?

I've heard about the ECU check.

I gather the XS has carpets - is checking the bulkhead so important on late plated vehicle like a 02-04? Is it possible to check these from underneath?

Dip white tissue into the top of the coolant expansion tank too. If it comes out black then walk away or budget for headgasket. Pop the bonnet up after test driving it and check the coolant hoses for pressure. The TD5 should not reach running temperature on tickover. The thermostat is a twin valve on a td5. One for temperature and another that opens at approx 1500rpm.

I would say get a landy specialist rather than a AA check as in my experience AA and RAC patrols do not know about how the coolant system on a TD5 works.

I checked mine through before buying and found no problems. I noticed that mine had a bodge repair on the top hose but apart from that all seemed to be in order. It took 2500 miles and all new coolant pipes, thermostat, expansion tank and radiator cap before I would believe my headgasket was gone.

Hi mate, I just bought a TD5 90 and all the above advice is sound (wish I had asked first!)
Only extra thing I can think of is keep an ear out for the fuel pump in the fuel tank. If it make a whine or seems loud budget for a new one. Mine went 1 week after getting it home, luckily I got a replacement for £75 there normally £220 and I had to cut an access hole in the back above the tank.
