I am looking to buy a first RR.

I come from a Shogun LWB 3.5 V6 GDI which was very practical, comfortable and reliable but lacked power when towing. It was used purely as workhorse to travel to Northern Finland, tow, etc. (Got a bunch of other cars).

Within the budget I want to spend, I can get a 3.6 TDV8 of 2006-2008 with 100 to 125k on the clock or a 2006 4.2SC with 80 to 120k on the clock.

What do I need to look for? I understand the 4.2 is more reliable?

Any thoughts welcome!

For info: fuel efficiency is NOT really a consideration. Easy of maintenance and reliability is.

Other question: what is the difference between a 2006 and a 2007 4.2SC? They seem to have different controls for the 4x4 system. Any other differences?

Thanks!

Welcome. Which L322 to buy is a question asked on this site about 4 or 5 times a week. Or at least it feels like that .To save @Saint.V8 or @holidaychicken having to write it all out again, I was going to give to a link to the multitude of threads already in existence , which answer the question in depth BUT I am still having major issues with the site loading. So can merely suggest typing, as I did, ' l322 buying advice' into the search bar and you will find lots of reading on the subject. I am sure that you will find everything you need to make an informed decision.
Good luck and happy driving.

Looking for it.

However, I see lots of comments on "fuel consumption" but few on reliability.

Also, is there a max mileage to buy either car?

It really depends on the history of the car as a neglected low mileage one can give a lot more trouble than a higher mileage that's been cared for and also some of the common faults have already been corrected on a higher mileage car.

I don't know much about the later 06 onwards vehicles as far as the engines go but both are Jag I believe. I think if you can get anything sub 100k miles you are doing ok again as long as the history is genuine. I would imagine a very well maintained engine would be ok up to 200k but depending on whether like me you intend to drive like miss daisy's personal charge for 100 miles a month or you have a lot of miles to do, I personally wouldn't want to see much more than 100k to start out with.

Maybe have a catch up with this guy and share some notes and let us know how you get on.

1. I tend to do longer journeys with the "workhorse", incl towing, going to countries with extreme temperatures (Northern Finland for instance)

2. I drive my cars hard. If I wanted to drive Miss Daisy, I'd have kept my 3.5 GDI Shogun. Reliable, comfortable, but just not enough power, especially when towing.

Hence my question whether, bar fuel consumption, there are other things to considr when choosing a 4.2 vs 3.6

Well as no one has asked already,,,,,,can you upload a doodle in the style of a court artist please,
No doodle=it never happened;)
