Thanks very much for your help Nodge , i was able to get it a bit cheaper (€240) at micks garage
tried just replacing master but made no difference so in we go....
I was just about to jump in there saying if your pedal was wet with fluid then the master is the problem but if you already changed it then you can rule that out.
So long as it is properly bled that is!
Have you checked and double checked the system is properly bled? Changing a clutch is a very big job so you wouldn't want to go through all that pain to then find you just needed to bleed it a bit more.

BTW, did you ever get the 2000 car going?
 
yes system was replaced and bled and still no dice so i guess the clutch release bearing / slave failed as that was what seeemed to be making the whirring noise that was indeed getting slightly noisier over the last 2 months .
The 2000 is at a friends place who fixes up old land rovers , I tried plusgas on the slave lever but it would not budge so my friend offered to buy it as a future project . Quick question could i send the vcu from the 2000 off to Bell in exchange for a reconditioned one for the td4 ? Reverse lock on the td4 is getting a bit tight and i would like to replace it as soon as clutch is sorted.

I got to drive the 2000 for about ten miles before the slave lever failed . also the coolant was mucky after that run so at that point i was ready to give up on it and my mate stepped in to take it off my hands.
I can do easy stuff like servicing and maintenance but gearboxes and engine overhauls give me the willys.
 
If concerned call Bells and ask if that would be OK but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be.
Have you tried the OWU test to confirm your suspicions? I'd be surprised if a car with 70k needed a new VCU.
 
yes i have redone that test about a month ago with a 8 kilo weight and it took about 40 seconds to do 45 degree turn


it's got almost 80k on it now

I normally use a 5kg weight and a 1.2m bar and so long as the time is under 1.5 minutes I'm happy. My last car when I bought it took nearly 3 minutes and no harm done but I didn't take any chances and reconned it. Most cars go well over 100k miles before the VCU is changed or removed.
 
So long as it doesn't feel like the brakes are on while reversing on full lock and the OWU test gives a time of less than 1.5 minutes I'd be happy enough. I suspect the vast majority of times damage is done to the drive train is because of a combination of very tight VCU and missmatched tyres or driving with a soft tyre.
Most people will also get new front tyres and keep the rears because they are not as worn. If doing that I believe the new tyres must go on the back of the car which almost never happens.
 
Twas the slave cylinder that failed , clutch and flywheel were fine but installed new clutch kit anyway . Going like a dream now , thanks lads for all the good advice!
 
Like i said , gearboxes give me the willys. Had a mechanic buddy do it , said that the slave failed and got stuck on the input shaft. He said it is a much easier job with a proper garage lift.
How to :

1. listen to funny noise for a few weeks .
2. ask a few questions on online forums
3. get told you can " fix it or live with it" but it's not serious
4.get stuck on the side of the road 2 weeks later at 10 o'clock at night phoning the AA
5.ask for advice on landyzone about spare parts
6. Get good advice and purchase parts
7. Get it done or DIY :)

Hi again, anyone got an opinion on which fuel pump to buy as replacement ? looking at a lucas one for under a ton, are lucas fuel pumps any good?
