if youve money to burn and want a toy for the weekend or a metal box you can hose out buy a defender

if you want value for money and a usable road vehicle to ferry the family about get a disco

in standard form theres little between them on yer average green lane.except comfort.

the only reason disco's exist is to supply cheap parts for defenders when the disco's have rotted away;):D

Couldn't agree more :D

and wheel size, and overhang, and (in some cases) ARBs ;)

Rip of the bumpers, lift it and stick some big wheels on, will go anywhere a fender does, well, mine does anyway ;)

And Fenders are f&*king cooler! :D

Yeah fair point, I will prob end up with a 'fender one day, IMHO they aint worth the extra £3000 when its a weekend toy, they are cool tho...

Anyway, back on topic... if you had to get a 90 (;)) then I would go for a 200/300tdi personally as they are less reliant on electrical systems but then I would be using it mostly off road. If you wanted to use it daily then a newer TD5 would prob be the better option as its a more refined engine, better MPG (supposedly) and being a newer vehicle it should have less wear and tear on it in general....

Or get a Disco..... and a welder....
Maybe not in romford, inside the LEZ. Unless it got some seats or however that works.

i think looking at the defender as the best off roader landrover ever made it would be beaten by the discovery, landrover called the discovery 3 the best off roader they ever made then the d 4 was sort of a more powerful easier gearbox plusher trim version.

but defenders are very desirable for a few reasons lice there iconic looks, good resale value, good workhorse and easy to work on where as the discovery s dont have that.

also all the discovery owners are going to be paranoid about there bodywork on there cars where as the defender owners dont really care as it wouldn't be as expensive to fix.

Well i have had a disco 200tdi and i was very impressed with it.
It took us up some steep hills waded through billing a couple of times.
I wish i had looked after it, bellied it out a couple of times and it take a lot of punishment.
I agree with what you say about welding....they do rott, well i have a welder now incase its needed, but finding a decent 200tdi ....mmmmmm difficult.

Hello,

Id be interested in to find out peoples opinion on the defender 90's.
Are they the best standard off roader that land rover do?

What would be considered the best 90 to use as a road/off road vehicle?

No a series is better off road. The shorter the better :D

I was thinking more along the lines of climbing hills and negotiating over objects such as rocks. Do the 90's have a lower lower gearing, if you know what i mean or is the low gear box the same on all land rovers?

Im pretty sure they have a lot lower gear ratios. Getting 85 mph out of a 90/defender is about as good as it gets, but a disco with the same engine tends to be better for the motorway. But... you obviously have sense and are going to join the many of us that have 90's because we don't give a sh*t about driving down the motorway fast haha... we just do it in style! :)

I know low range 3rd works out at high range 1st on the LT77 gear box, which standard for 90's from 1984 to 1994. The standard engines for that gear box are 2.5N/A 2.5TD (what I have :) ) 2.5 petrol and 200tdi

Most people dislike the 2.5TD due to the bad reputation of the 1985 models, the 1989 onward models are supposed to have their issues sorted out (cracking heads, cracking pistons and running away) With a bit more regular maintenance though, they will pretty much last for ever. Change their oil once every 3k miles etc etc.... got 170,000 on my clock and she still starts on the button and i can get a steady 65 mph out of her.

If you get a 2.5TD or N/A... speed and masses of power on tap won't be one of the benefits ;)

Anyway.... pheeew

I am going to disagree with the lot of you.

The ability of the landy you chose is all fine and fair. But it has got more to do with who is driving it and their ability to cope with and adapt to the tarrain there driving.

Discos keep Defenders going in more ways than one, eh, Patrick! ;)

I totally agree. Its all well and good saying one vehicle is better than another, but if you, the driver, can't live up to the vehicles expectations then it really does not matter about its capabilities, pros/cons.

You can drive a landy in the most extreme conditions... any landy (with the exception of the freelander ;) ) so long as you, the drive, has the skill to do so :)

Never mind what this vehicle can do, or what that one cant.

You just need to find the one thats right for you and what you want that vehicle to do!
Be realistic, be thorough in your research and test drive em all.

By the way short wheelbase int always the best offroad ;-)

An as much as it pains me to say it! Unless you want to win RTV events don't write off (what am I saying) the freelander (burn it by all means lol)
Yup it lacks ground clearance but you wont ever get stuck cross axled unless the VCU's knackered anyway ;-)

NB Not heard of an FL2 havin the same problems ;-)

Short wheel base has its advantages and disadvantages, just like the long wheel base. I love my 90, and would choose it over a 110 barge any day ;)

But then again thats only because I like the look of the 90 over the 110 and I feel comfortable driving one. So you're right... a lot of it does come down to personal preference. :)
