Has been a good while since I bought a britpart item ,alas heard more bad stories than good about them

Know there’s a mixed opinion of there parts, for me I wouldn’t ever touch them

Don’t know personally what items britpart ever fitted at the factory as a genuine Land Rover part , apologises if I’m reading it wrong
Yes I think I explained wrong I saw a poopart clutch kit the other day, out the box it was all Valeo... the injector harness is leoni the same as genuine and other things too like the swivel housing etc, but there is some stuff you wouldn’t put on your landy for sure
 
britpart are a wholesaler like bearmach and allmakes, the sell a range of parts lie the other 2 if you order cheap pattern thats what you get if you order decent then thats what you get, allmakes pattern take some beating for been pure crap,but id think the wholesalers buy from the same factories

Indeed , ages ago for my series bought a poopart master cyl, lasted 4 x weeks before blowing the seals, whilst I was on holiday with the family :(

Must admit haven’t had any complaints using bearmach, for brake parts have personally always bought genuine parts

However heard good things about Delphi for brakes , used Meyle for bushes and Timpkin for bearings

Never tried allmakes , appreciate the heads up, thanks and will make sure I don’t buy that make

No wonder you won’t use them after being bitten buy the poopart on holiday... I’d be the same!

it was endless failures that I had when I used there parts on my series and having to do the job twice , the holiday was the final straw , so after seeing a poopart crankshaft I thought well if JLR can’t get it right I bet ur bottom dollar poopart can’t

Know crap part offer a 12 x months warranty with there crankshafts but I bet they wouldn’t pay out £5k for another 2.7 TDV6 engine

The 3 x litre TDV6 Recon I think is around 7-8k

Pic is of what normally happens to the engines when the cranks fail, some have been extremely lucky and believe they’ve been able to rescue the block, with all new pistons and heads

In my experience Britpart used to live up to it name as Sh””tpart because most of it was poo... nowadays it’s good stuff as far as I’m aware
are you talking about the genuine or branded goods britpart sell or just the cheap pattern they also sell

Have previously bought the bearmach service kits for my TD4 , items were marked as bearmach unless alas they are made by someone else and bearmach brand marked them

Can see where ur coming from

However For the D3 I’ve bought genuine or meyle, oil used mannol

bearmach like britpart just wholesale parts they dont make them apart from a few special items and offer different brands if it hasnt a brand name or markings on the part its cheap pattern,which may or may not be any good thats the lottery of pattern

Is also interesting reading the small print, title says bearmach and as u say some of the other parts have been marked with all other makes
 
Have u had any experience with Delphi plse , ie for brakes , heard EBC pads are supposed to be good

Can’t fit the V8 brakes on mine as my wheels are 17 inch, as I wanted bigger sidewall tyres , (235/75/17) currently find the brakes work fine , pads still have plenty of meat on them , but in the spring wish to fit new discs and pads all round and also fit some new EPB brake shoes

Current discs have a very slight lip on them so would rather just replace the lot , inc all new hoses, did replace the rear brake hoses when I done the wishbone
 
Also meant ask please, do any of u use the brake ceramic brake grease instead of coppaslip

As I’ve been using it and must admit find it better and haven’t had squealing pads since using it

I’m not looking forward doing the brake shoes

That's an interesting read and something I'd considered myself, after looking at a couple of broken TDV6 cranks.

Place ur bets , wonder how long it would last , I certainally wouldn’t fancy trying this out in an engine :eek::eek:

I suspect the crank will last as well as the original, providing it's made to the same spec.


It looks like it's design of the engine that's the main issue, not the the manufacturing of the crank.

The linked report is basically saying that the bearings aren't large enough to deal with the loads imposed on them. This would lead to two failure modes of the bottom end, neither is predictable or really avoidable without more involved maintenance.

The bearings being under sized appears to cause the shells under the most load (centre two) to be "hammered" down, which increases the bearing running clearance. When the centre bearings in an engine get more slop than the end bearings, there's a bending force applied to the crank. This constant bending will eventually lead to sudden crank failure, which could well take out the block as well.
The other problem with these bearing being overloaded and "hammered" is reducing the "crush" fit that is designed in to keep them solid in the block. If the "crush" relaxes, then the bearing can rotate and seal off the vital oil supply to itself and the crank pin journal the drilling in the crank feeds. The engine that was investigated showed rotation of the main, partially blocked oil was and the overheating of the crank pin. This lead to seizure of that bearing, which stalled the engine, so block damage would be minimal.
Some engines fail in a far more catastrophic manor when the crank breaks, which renders them as scrap.

This report leaves one question unanswered imo. This question is, how to ensure long term reliability of the TDV6.

To this question I would give a simple answer, you can't, definitively.

However if the bearings are under sized for the job they are being asked, then it is potentially possible to increase the service life of the engine. This would involve replacing the bearings at intervals throughout the engine's life. This may sound excessive, but it's better to replace the bearings at say 50K mile intervals, than replace the whole engine at 80 to 120K intervals.

This is the exact same process used by builders of high performance racing engines. An example of would be an engine from a BTCC car, where the engines are stripped, cleaned, wearables replaced and reassembled every few hundred race miles. This process which seem excessive, is necessary if in race reliability is important.

So if the same philosophy of fix before it can't be fixed is applied, the D3/4 engine could have a long service life.

Just my thoughts on it anyway.
