Does the red light come on when the front brake pads need changing?

What year is it?
Mines a 1999 and has an audible warning ie the brakes squael

By the way I'm not taking the pee they really do have this warning!

no, the red light comes on to tell you that either the handbrake is on or there is a MAJOR problem with the braking system, probably brake fluid level is too low.

(Hmmn, just rethinking this, we may have all been suckered. Which red light ? If it's the one on the back, it's to tell the driver behind you are braking)

I've just dropped it off at the local garage to have the front pads changed, €100.00...
