So last Friday had new air con rad on and woke up Saturday to find she sounded like a diesel with asthma. Shut her off straight away and dreaded the worst. Never had a rattle a knock or anything from her before and so this came right out of the blue. Garage 2 mins up the road diagnoses a knackered timing chain tensioner. So this morning I’ve drained the oil and dropped the sump to find the remains of a chain guide laying in a pool of oil. ***** it. Well garage want 2k to fix so nuts to that so as they say let’s get involved. So today whole front of the car is off both rocker covers are off water pump is off and now ready to order the bits to lock her up and take the timing covers off. So while I’m in this deep is it worth replacing the cam chains and adjusters and what about the vanos system!!! If anyone can tell me how to upload pics I will ?

No you just need todo the guides I advise you clean out the vanos solinoids with several squirts of brake cleaner and fit a new tensioner while your there.

Those are on the list and finally found my oil leaks which where from the vanos solenoids :) By the look of things the tensioner was ok but will replace it I think I just had a guide that failed as there was no other Noise or anything it just suddenly started knocking. What I didn’t realise was how in-depth the timing had to be.

replace the tensioner is a must...and then consider it a service item, every 50-60k miles....or 3 years

I have just done my guides (one had snapped), chains, VANOS, breather hoses, PCV, Cyclone and all tensioners.....was involved and HIGHLY recommend putting the bolts in labelled bags or containers....

I did a vid of the vanos reseal as above, and i have taken pictures, but I cannot add any further info than what the Beisan System website has given for the M62 rebuild...it was good source of reference as is RAVE obviously!

Same here Beisan covers most of it and also there is a YouTube video or about 10 videos of the whole process and Rave and also the German auto solutions site you will need timing tools and as saint says make sure you bag and label every nut and bolt . I did valley pan but not oil pump chain . I rebuilt my vanos and it sounds worse now than it ever did ...

Rrrr's, you'd feck up a good c*n't.xx:eek::D

Cheers for the advice boys think iv got everything covered and didn’t realise that timing the damn thing up was so involved but glad I watched a few videos of it being done. Amazing that some sites charge £400 for a timing kit when you can get them off amazon for £80 !!!. Will be replacing all tensioners vanos solenoid seals after cleaning them out and the chain but not the cam chain and obviously all guides. Island 4x4 has been my shop of choice so will let you all know how it goes next weekend when we time it up and start putting back together. Still surprised that one day nothing the next this. Obviously hasn’t been a slow process as as mentioned before none of the rattle symptoms that are normally associated with this problem

Beware that the cheaper timing kits can be slopply made....tolerances are key to the timing on the M62, also check how the VANOS Cam Plate Locating Pegs are made, some are loose.

Yes will do but kit iv has from island has always been ok before so I hope this won’t be any different!! Don’t need to be doing this again

Don't use the cheap timing chain kits..

There is a £3000 rebuild on an M62 in my garage that was caused by cheap timing chain components.

Not only that, rebuilding one of these from the crankshaft up is a pain in the díck..

on my 4th and hate them a tiny bit more every time i'm presented with one..

As my indie calls them ( bread and butter ) this is the first time iv done one but wasn’t prepared to spend 2k on him doing it. If this goes again I know where there’s a very long drop off a short cliff near by !!!!
