Wammers, yes that sounds bang on, strange that the exhaust gasses cool the combustion process, always thought the exhaust gasses were raging hot!!

Grrrr may give the expensive fuel a shot, but I think it's a little more complex

Less air, less oxygen, less heat. Exhaust gas replaces oxygenated air not needed to maintain the power level requested within the bounds of EGR operation. If the EGR is open at an high power request, and exhaust gas enters the system, there is not enough oxygenated air to burn the fuel needed for that power level cleanly which results in smoke.

Ok so here is the EGR off the vehicle, the valve seems pretty jammed but haven't cleaned it yet, is it usual for it to be so scuzzy in the manifold.......

Thanks everyone for being so helpful.......and patient!!

Also what are the two hoses inlets for?

There is a good strong spring pressure holding the valve closed.

It has had an engine change that is not a Landrover EGR manifold. It should be plastic not alloy. Engine is from a BMW or Vauxhall. Did you check the spring for weakness?

That is a very early EGR valve designed i would think to run without a MAF. Reference EC level 1 EGR without feedback. One hose is the vacuum point the other looks like a breather. Only one vac hose on the Landrover/later version. No wonder you have problems. My advice would be just clean it as best you can and blank the EGR gas inlet with a penny. Should sort it out.

Great, thanks Wammers will do, as per Robs suggestion as well.

When I stripped the engine down to get at the timing sprockets I had to get the gaskets from BMW........

Thanks again

All done.........still loads of black smoke when revved to 4k (off Load).......

I guess a trip to Wimbledon is on the cards!!

Over fuelling or more likely lack of air. Or MAP sensor could be over reading air pressure. Lots to play with.

have you checked to see if your getting good boost pressure from your turbo, recently the grommet which holds the plastic filter comming out of the cam cover and into the intercooler tunnel from air box to turbo got pushed in the hole and damaged the impeller, it started and run ok but as soon as i loaded it up jet black smoke was everywhere, replaced turbo cartridge alls ok. p38 1997 non egr

Bit fed up with it all really........driving my 993 need a break from the RR.

I think all that is OK bob, as far as I remember when Steve kindly put his computer on my car boost pressures n stuff were good

:multiply: Petrol is the way, in a V8 of-course

oooh Give it to me, I'll fix it.;) As a total long shot, contaminated diesel can at times cause black smoke, I'm thinking of bacterial growth in the fuel. I've seen it a few times on marine diesels.

it's called Diesel pest what you refer to

I feel a newish X trail is on the way, my "cheap car" didn't work out, cutting my losses......

I'm turning Japanese shocking!!

I agree I've become a wimp, but I did spend most of the winter underneath it on my drive.....so not too wimpee
