hi all

quick question ,had a look on the search button and found very few answers so here goes

i have a towbar fitted and want to get a bike rack thing is with the spare wheel fitted does the rack fitted to the tow bar still have enought clearance to allow a bike to be fitted to the rear space on the rack ???

if so which is best to go for? (2 bikes)

Best one is a simsbar rack, it mounts in the centre of the spare wheel. And holds 3 bikes. :)

 
I have a Buzz Rack Sparky 3. Take a look at my threat 'My 2006 TD4 HSE Auto' for photos.

It is a towbar mounted one. I didn't want to put any weight on the tailgate.

Bought from Roofbox.co.uk.

It works really well and easy to fit.
 
Here is mine.

Hook over towball, lift the lever, put the lock pin in place and all ready to mount the bikes.

That on epicuser has looks a better effort though. Mine is a old poss 2010 version

What bike is that? Specialized I'm guessing. Different than normal rear suspension system. That the one with a brain type thing???

Spacer is 25mm the bigger the better I assume

Yep, Specialized S-Works Epic Alloy frame from mid 2000's. Bought s/h and built up myself. Doesn't react to rider input, just bumps. It is built using fairly heavy/substantial parts and weights in at a heavy 28lbs for a full suspension bike.
 
Looks a good bike though. I really need to get out on mine more.

I hope original poster gets a bike rack sorted out.

I do believe the lights on the rack are on the wrong sides. I think the fog should be on the offside. which lights up when you put the fog switch on? if it is offside, then its just swap over the lens, if it is the nearside then swapping wires may be needed as well as lens. or do the light fitting and arm move?

Fog not wired up on the car tow electrics.....

The lights are on the correct way. We just drive on the wrong side of the road compared to most of the world :D

yes quite right fog should be on off side and working ,But looking at them all this one looks the best I think!
 
I'll have to check the rack again, as the fog should be wired in. It is the reversing light that I have not wired up in the car.

It is! Just had the Hope brakes serviced by Hope £100 plus postage! I could buy a new (pretty crap) bike for that. :doh:





And people used to say that a bicycle is poor mans transport ...... Not any more.



I need to get out more on my bike too, which is one of the reasons I bought the rack. Quick to fit so less of an excuse to go down to the Surrey Hills or elsewhere.
 
I have got a new simbars bike rack for sale if your intrested pm me. used it once rock solid and you can open the door unlike towbar mounted ones.
 
The only ones that allow you to open your tailgate fully would be universal ones that attach to the spare wheel or the land rover one that fixes to the spare wheel mounting studs.

One of the towbar mounted tipping ones would probably allow the tailgate to be half opened, but I personally just wind the window down or if I am topless lean over the edge!

I did the same. Just wound the window down, but with the lifted Freelander, it is a bit more of a reach in!!!!

I can tip mine as well, but not really worth it as can't open door very far.

I didn't want a door mounted one as I don't like loading it up with 20+kg for 1 bike or 35-40 with 2 bikes. That's a lot of extra weight on the old door hinges. 3rd nine would add even more :D
 
I don't like hanging the bikes either. I much prefer to have the wheels strapped. It isn't much of an issue on my old clunker claude butler in that picture but the gt zaskar I am building up and the other bikes that my mates ride...... Well I just wouldn't. Trail rash is unavoidable but rack rash is a crime.
