Hi all.

I have a set of 16" Disco wheels to slap on my 110 defender ('92) and would like to know what is the biggest tyre size I can accommodate without a lift kit?

The 16" Disco rims are 225 wide but if I can go bigger in width plus bigger tyre diameter on standard height then I will.
 
disco steels or alloy? if they are the alloys they are not rated for a 110. steels are fine.


do a search for tyre size. everyone is... tired of the same old question

Biggest tyre size depends on what you want to do with it and if you plan to mod or not. Also what spec is your 110. LR fitted different springs for different applications.

In short road tyres or AT's without big lugs will likely rub less. Even more so if you don plan to go off road or flex the suspension.

235/85r16 or some 7.50's is an easy direct fit tyre. Or you could go 265/75's if you want a wider tyre.

Bigger than these and you'll want a small lift and maybe trim the fender flares.

Nice picture of a 110 there, shame you can't actually see the wheels though :D

As I said, it all depends on what you are doing, the exact tyres and the actual springs on the vehicle at the moment. A 110 Hi Cap is quite different to a 12 seater county station wagon. :)


Also depends how much you flex the suspension too.

Not a 110 I know, but a 90.

These are Simex 33.11.50R15's on 15x10 rims. Against a tape measure they are nearer 34" than 33" though.

The Landy has uprated shocks and springs (forget the brand at the mo) and I reckon sits about 1" higher than a stock 90.

On the road it's fine and didn't rub at all, even over curbs and the like. Off road though under flex they'd rub the fender flares.

my tyres were kumho kl17 about 3/4 tread. wheels are wellers, 2 standard and 2 with extra 25mm offset but cant remember which way around. Suspension was standard (old) springs with fairly new shocks on front and being a county had self levelling helper spring so prob helps reduce rubbing.

never done more than green laning, some very rutted/twisty but nothing compared to trials or p&p and never had any major issues.

That's a much better pic BTW. Looks really good on that size tyre, they fill the arch nicely. :)

Slightly off topic, but how do you rate the Kumho's? I've not had a chance to run those yet.
 
Kumhos are a good tyre. Nowhere near as good as simex/special tracks etc in the boggy stuff but are a hell of a lot better on the road.

have had no issues in the wet or with noise but whichever choice there is always compromise.

Talking to a guy a while back who claims his mate trials with them but for me I would go simex/insa. I use the car about 80-90% on the road so kumhos were the more sensible option ;)
 
With regard to the steel wheels, Discovery steelies...

... are some of the strongest wheels LR has ever produced. Excellent choice for heavily loaded vehicles, e.g. expedition trucks or tow vehicles.
 
The disco wheels I have are the steels as posted above.

The jobbies I currently have on my original Morris Minor style Defender wheels are 7.5 x 16's. These are a load taller than the 225 / 70 / 16's that are on the disco steelies.

I know bugger all about tyres and am assuming that the 75 bit, ie 235 / 75 or 85 are to do with height? ie 85's are a taller sidewall than 75's?

I don't want to lose height on my replacement tyres for axle clearance reasons.

The 110 is not a hi-cap, it's a commercial hard top van with two seats. it's used for work for towing my trailer and is my daily runner also but I intend to use it also for greenlaning and so want some decent off-road performance out of her, without spending silly money on mods.

my iphone and camera are both currently knackered otherwise I'd have posted pics of her by now!

tyre sizes are easy, e.g. 235/75R16

235 is the width in mm
75 is the profile (from the rim to the outer edge of the tyre), this is a percentage of the width, so 75% of 235mm or 176.25mm
R stands for radial (as opposed to crossply)
16 is the rim in inches

Sorry to come across a bit thick but I've never really been into ****ing about modifying chavmobiles in my younger days and so I'm new to all of this malarkey.

I have big plans to turn my old workhorse into a weekend funmobile. Just need a little guidance here and there.

If you use your landy for towing then you dont want to go much bigger in rolling radius(diameter) as it will affect the gearing making 5th a downhill gear.
If its width you want then 265/75r16 is about the biggest , no mods needed , and spacers are not a good idea (loads increase on bearings and bumps will deflect steering more increasing loads on box and ball joints etc) If its diameter then 255/85r16 is about it , will give a little more under diff . HTSH

Wheel spacers always open up a debate.

Disco rims have very little offset backspacing (sit further into the middle of the vehicle). If you get full flex you might find wider tyres rubbing on the side of the rear bed. Also you'll notice they'll rub on full lock on the radius arms.

Neither are major issues, the rubbing on the radius arms either ignore and don't turn the steering wheel as far, or adjust the steering stops (2 bolts and very easy to do).

In terms of width, a 235 is wider than stock, but often still considered fairly narrow. 265's will be fine. And on Disco rims I probably wouldn't go any wider.

As for spacers, I have no probs at all. Running wheelspacers on a Disco rims is in affect no different to running deep dish 8 spokes or modular rims anyhow.
