Spring’s off....

Decision time.

Cut out the rot from behind the spring and am left with this...

There looks like strengthening plates behind my hole which I’ve cut into.

How’s the best way to deal with this.

a) finish cutting them off and ignore them.

b) weld the slits up and grind down weld, make patch a bit short top and bottom, weld that to strengthening plate. Grind down weld, and then weld over strengthening weld and patch weld , like a third weld. ?? If that makes any sense.

Buy a new spring seat and cut the whole lot out and repair it properly.

I think that the rot most likely spreads further back and is probably eating away behind the strengthening plate so likely to surface again further down the chassis leg.

Definitely. Cut the lot. I'll show you a picture of mine on drivers side and it's spread and eaten into boot support post. Measure up well and chop it out. You can then repair chassis first prior to welding spring seat back in. Am not looking forward to doing mine

If you have just caught that strengthening plate I'd weld the slit though. Hopefully it was only 1mm disc

What paint are you using... I thought it was Red Lead but then saw green one on the tin ?

Thanks for your replies guys.
I don’t think I’m that good a welder to chop the spring support out and replace it in the proper place !!

I had a feel inside the chassis , and there isn’t that much cruddy metal past where I cut the hole.

It's all measuring. Provided you take datums and accurately measure from them you can then mark and weld. This is easy for me to say say here drinking coffee this morning though. I feel your pain as mine is intimidating too.
Are the seams to your spring seat ok? It looks pretty pitted and thin on the right of your chopped section?

It started to come out but seized and I couldn’t move it either way.

So do I drill and re-tap or drill and try stud extractor?

Try a stud extractor, might go, but be warned, if the extractor goes pop it makes drilling that out much harder as they are hardened steel!

Just be sure to centre the drill as best you can and drill it in stages, if you can get some LH drill bits and the combination of heat and the drill biting on the reverse might just draw it out.

Gottit !!!!
Drilled into bolt 7mm bit.
As it was halfway out before it snapped I thought there would be some thread at the rear to run a tap into ..... and there was!

Brown trouser moment when the tap got stuck at about the same place !!

But got it loose, carried on and it brought what was left of the bolt with it - result !!
