Removed the 3 x 8mm nuts and end casing from starter to find the outer brushes cream crackered
Dropped off at local car shop at 4.30pm on a saturday afternoon and he says no problem £35 come back tomorrow at 1pm and i will have some new brushes in it
Picked up today, fitted back in 1/2hr and started straight away
Removal - Battery & battery tray and engine cover
1st nut & bolt easy to see on side of starter, 2nd bolt a 13mm needs a mirror and a long extension to it from battery tray under all the wiring, Easy when you know where it is
Hardest part getting it out & back in through tight gap between coolent pipes
1 hr to remove & refit
Dealer cost £300 - £350
Cost me 1hr of my time & £35
Result
A busy weekend which included an oil & filter, aif filter & pollen filter change and finding i was posted the wrong fuel filter

Im lost, why did you remove the battery and tray to change the starter motor ?
Was the mirror to check what you looked like whilst doing the job
Its so satisfying knowing you have done the job yourself and saved a fortune in the process, my wifes starter motor on her TD4 did the same thing last year, £40 ish and 1/2 hour of your time, job done.
I was quoted £350 for supply and fit by an indepandant, me thinks not.

Yes the Auto must be different to the manual.I was suprised how easy a job it was to do as the garages i called to quote on the job all took a sharp intake of breath before telling me it was a difficult job
I'm an ex spanner jockey so know my way around but if i can pay somebody else to do to avoid getting dirty i will but it was a 20 minute job to take it out and the replace it the following day.
I do love ringing them up though and letting them give you all 'The Chat' as they must know better, one idiot quoted me 1 1/2 hours to change the front pads and wanted £200, it cost me £24 for OEM pads and 30 minutes of my time and they where done.
