Whoever is trashing these beautiful RRC's by turning them into off-road monsters should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves....................................that is what Discos are for!

I agree with you in some respects. If you are going to butcher one by bobtaleing then sacrifice a disco. Keeping it looking the same but adding a few extras to improve it's performance then go for it.
The bit about weak fuel maps is cr-p too,put around by companies who were selling chips to owners who couldnt know any different. It was just a poorly built engine stretched beyond its natural limit.
Fuel mixture is the only credible explanation for the greater prevalence of this fault in the 4.6s. The 4.6s developed much more torque at lower revs by virtue of the increased crank reach and stroke. At lower revs and under load these engines ran too lean (attempt at improving economy) and too hot, hence frequent overheating, but the 4.6 was more frequently a victim because of this.

I hear you on the chips, and I thought about getting my P38 done as the feedback on this forum is actually pretty positive I think.

well...they are all crap..ancient ohv design..12mpg!!.so many better v8 engines out there..

yes you can make them go,but the cost!!
But you won't find anything in a Classic RR for less money that'll out perform them easily. Sure modern units might make more power and/or better mpg, but it'll cost you to get them.

Where did you get that mpg figure from Zen - I assume that's from off-roading? My 3.5efi Vogue auto has done a genuine 22mpg on the road & that's included a high percentage of motorway driving at the legal limit.

What sort of off roading are you doing that you actually need more power?

Now that's a fair point. I assumed I was going to be wandering off up the misty mountains where no one had been before and would need more power to defeat Sauron. But come to think of it, probably not.

Question has been answered: a 3.5 it is.

H'mm that's not good, no wonder you have a poor opinion of the RV8. I've only ever got that sort of mpg (with any of my four RRC's) on short journeys in mid-winter:confused2:

but thats typical...if your honest..most stick their heads in the sand and think its more..

Nope not in my experience. I think you must have had a heavy foot, lots of town stop start and then drove too fast on the m/way if that's all you "averaged"

An old 3.5 carb RR we had, if you thrashed the living #### out of it would still return 12.9mpg. A V8 90 I use a lot will do an easy 17mpg average and upto 19.

The 4.6 HSE's we've had would do almost 21mpg on a longer run and read 16+ the rest of the time.

12mpg is certainly possible I admit, but it must either be you or your use that cases such low overall averages if its happened on multiple vehicles.

Sorry Zen but I don't keep a bucket of sand in the shed & I'm too old to believe in fairys! Two years ago I did a 632 mile round trip with my current 3.5efi auto & used just over 28 gallons. I estimate that 80 odd percent of that mileage was motorway, with the rest a mixture of A roads, country lanes & town.

With the torque convertor locked following lorries id get a consistant 25mpg with my pub maths. Got low teens regularly too though.
