Hi All,

I've looked in the usual places, Paddock, Craddock, ebay etc and as I am fairly new to the LR game, I don't want to make a costly mistake in buying a crap set up, therefore can you guys point me in the right direction to purchasing a good 2" lift setup? Won't be doing much off roading, just pulling a trailer once in a while.

Defender is currently stripped so thought I might as well change/replace nearly everything....... I've got the bug!!

To be honest, the Terrafirma kits are very good (according to countless chaps I've spoken to about them).

But I'll tell you, the Britpart yellow springs are actually very good. I have them on mine and I am working the vehicle every day. I know quite a few guys whose working vehicles use Britpart springs via choice.

I know there is always mixed opinion. I know one local Land rover enthusiast (works on them for a living) who turns his nose up at Britpart springs BUT he actually doesn't run a working Vehicle as such, or an off roader, or a roadie that does more than 30 miles a week? I do, every day and quite heavy off roading 3-4 times a week last 8 weeks (love my job!) And seemingly endless road miles. The springs seem to a good job. Also towing different machinery and trailers 400kgs up to just shy 1.9 tonne every day on and off road.

The heavy duty ones are bouncy when not loaded up but I quite like the ride. You could go medium duty rear springs and use the little assistor springs or bags when towing heavy loads if you dont want bouncy ride at other times.

Apparently Britpart ones are 1.5 inch lift which doesn't mess with steering etc too much.

Mine are getting tired and I am going to replace with aTerrafirma kit as they seem good value and just bought their rtc damper which is very nicely made with good paint finish.

Oh boy I'm sure there is better stuff but my research suggests for the money TF stuff seems to dominate.

I'm going to correct the castor angles though as although people say not needed for 2 inch lift, 1 look at my bushes shows they are compressed a fair bit so interested to see if it makes much difference.

I dont have any of that dislocation cone stuff etc. But am doing some pretty heavy off roading and in a hurry too...haven't felt need for anything else actually.
 
Hi hybridni, the rtc might look good now it's new but if mine is anything to go by it won't last mate- the nice blue spring on mine started peeling after about 6-7months and the actual damper has now starting bubbling! Maybe I got a lemon but as far as I'm concerned the quality is ****e!

To be fair, they are the lowest foremost component so are going to get a lot of **** and crap thrown at them especially off road, mine have been on a few years and still look ok, and mine does pay and play and done a couple of Wales weekends laning. As for Britpart springs my experience with them are not good.

Why do you want to lift it? If you only do occasional off road and tow it would be best to keep it standard, unless you like the lifted look which is fair enough.
 
Terrafirma setup is fine but there's something to be said for 2" lift blocks for laning and occasional or mild off-roading because you don't get the hard ride HD springs will give you on a Defender..

I had thought about the Terrafirma setup along with britpart, however heard bad things about britpart........... will have another gander at these i think, and as you said, I aint doing much off roading so shouldn't be a problem......hopefully....

I want a 2" lift purely for looks, always loved the look on them with the kit on, and will go well with my big wheels I will put on it.

Whilst on the subject of suspension, do any of you guys know how to remove the old shocks and turrets, tried today, and the buggers are just turning in situ.....help.

Seen as you're not re-using you could just chop the nut off.
Or you need to hold the shock body (I find stillsons good for this) while un-doing the nut.
 
Terrafirma set up int bad just don't take a jet wash to the springs or shocks. The paint comes straight off!:(

My only gripe with them. Other than that they are brilliant off road. :)
 
I've heard a lot of people say the paints ****'e on the terrafirma stuff lately.

It really is. Only thing that let's it down.

Literally after my first off road (only a month old) session bought it home and the paint flaked off from the jet wash.

Pretty crap considering the price of the kit. :(

Thats unfortunate. I know of 2 chaps who have had them on about 18 months and they still look grand and are working well.

All I can say is that it transformed my steering at speed with the bigger tyres.

Regards the Britpart springs. Its odd..I know everybody slags them but I know of guys in my line of business that choose Britpart HD springs over anything else for their working vehicles. I read a lot online about in the how bad they are but locally they actually have a good rep. Im not defending them because they are on mine. I didnt fit them...bought it with them on. Haven't noticed any issue with them at all and original finish is in good order. I know for a fact they have been on the vehicle for more than 6 years If I'm truly honest, only reason I'm changing is because I'm sickened with the massive invisible spend on my landy and have had to replace so much just want to treat it to new suspension (shocks are fecked). And just going for TF for curiosity and because hear far more positive feedback than bad.

I have no experience of tf suspension sorry- I've been researching quite a bit lately as I'm going to replace my shocks, springs and all bushs in next couple of weeks and after thinking lift/no lift, hd springs/medium load, blue poly bushs/yellow poly bushs! I think its a bloody minefield...there is so much stuff available to pick through.

I would prefer to be standard. Only reason I'm keeping it lifted is the big tyres 35x12.5s. I actually need them rather than for looks. The skinny tryes etc just dig too deep in the soft stuff. The 35s are just right and save me a small fortune in grazing land repairs for angry landowners. Also, I'm not getting bogged to the axles very often at all in swampy ground.

My tyres are Dick Cepec Crushers...BIG skulls down the sides which looks a bit daft on a working vehicle but bloody good tyres. I much prefer them to the BFG muds. They definitely clear themselves better and the sidewalls are seriously tough. Not looking forward to replacing them though as can't find them at a sensible price. And being in NI doesn't help as we haven't got the same choice locally as you guys on the mainland.

Oh by the way...you will notice I was only referring to Britpart springs. I think just about everybody I know thinks the shocks are pure crap so its put me off even trying them. 1 guy I know has just fitted cellular dynamic shocks and seems really pleased but I would want to see what he thinks a year down the line.

The only off roading I do at the mo is when I go shooting with the dogs and the tyres have suprised me to be honest as they're road bias. I've recently moved to wales so I'm looking to do some green laning so may have to invest in some a/t's.

Yeah they are proving to be an excellent tyre. I'm completely gobsmacked at the battering the sidewalls can take without showing any damage.

Chris to be honest I'm very impressed with them on the road. And they do make an empty hi cap with HD springs a lot more comfortable!!!

But yeah, as you say its surprising what a more conventional tyre can do.

I had an old Frontera DTI. I abused it severely...it survived everything and went through some serious crap with just road tyres. That thing surprised me on many occasions.

Just fitted a Terrafirma TF204 kit ( +2" lift heavy load ) great on road not tried my trailer on yet but think they will great with trailer on, slightly the wrong choice for off roading as i have found the shockers to be stopping the axle from articulating fully but hoping to get away with rear top shocker -2" lowering mounts and -2" front turrets which should sort it.

i mainly went for the TF204 kit purely for carrying peeps in the back plus fishing gear as my wheel arches was rubbing all the time loaded up with peeps in the back and fishing gear with my old BP ones :)
