Overlander very nice photographs, thank you very much. Latest today from the Main Stealers they say nothing wrong with it charged the battery up and re-applied the unlock codes and the vehicle is fine, they say, no mention of being unable to communicate with their computor. I have asked them to look at the RF Receiver and if an old model to put me the one on that you helpfull people have identified as the main culprit. If that cures it I will be looking at the next job which will be air suspension Arnott or Dunlop??? When money available and finding somone who I can trust to fit!!!

I also mentioned the advice given to get a resync box, the dealer has never heard of these, whats the purpose and how much are they? Do they reduce the security system? Where are they fitted is it something I can fit? etc, etc.
This will be my next port of call if the rf receiver doesn't work.

Thank you in anticipation.

Hi, had the same problem with miy 99 p38.
I cured it by disconnecting the receiver located in the rear offside of the boot.
Also had my keys tested and found one key to be faulty.
Having my neighbour with his 98 p38 move away so his key fob did'nt wake my Rangie up flattening the battery helped most of all!

Best of luck.

why not disconnect the aerial wire from the rf receiver it worked on mine thanks to info from datatek on this website, also have you had the alternator checked as although its charging correctly it could be draining back when switched off usually needs a diode replacing inside the alternator if this is the case.

Hi Derek Ward, I have a cheap multi meter at home is there a way of me checking if the diode has gone, ie step by step instructions if possible.Main stealer still not looked at the RF receiver all day today, so still hoping the fix will be the new unit YWY500170.

The latest today is they had not looked at the RF Receiver as they hadn't had time to do so, we made a complaint about the lack of customer service and eventually got there Supervisor mechanic to look at the Receiver, which appears to be the original. He said he thinks he would be more concerned about the suspension dropping, this takes about 30amp from the battery while we are possibly in bed trying to level up the suspension. Walked away with no bill and 2 tickets for a morning of off road driving at Eastnor castle compliments of Stratstone., well done them eventually. This does still not address my problem which may appear to be power in battery related, after trying to pump up the suspension throughout the night, so I may wake up on Saturday with the car the same unable to start!!!!
Thank you.

The RF Receiver appears to be the old one now l know where it is situated now after escapade at main stealer. Mechanic said should be more worried about the self levelling kicking in and starting compressor this is what flattens battery, seems feasible explanation. However still unsure why the codes are going, engine turned over fine not struggling at all, is the RF receiver the only answer at £150 from Bearmach its a dear test.

the compressor will not start unless the engine is running ,if it does start with engine off then you have other problems
normally the only time you can run the compressor with engine off is under diagnostics but this would only be for a few seconds:)
regarding the engine sync code i have a 4.6 30th aniversary year 2000 which ive had for four years in that time the engine sync code has been lost about 5 times mostly when you reconnect after a flat battery so for that reason i have a sync mate you just plug in and go takes seconds
taw park 4x4 is where i got mine they also sell them on fleabay £ 129 with postage and vat
my 4.6 30th aniversary year 2000 may stand for a week or 2 at a time so i normally disconect the battery as it will only go flat
if its used once a week no prob but i think over time the onboard electronics runs it flat
whereas my old defender with no electronics will stand for 3 months and still start up

Hi klf400, how easy are they to fit and will they take out any of the security systems. Is it better to fit the synnc box or go for the new RF Receiver?

Hi J the range just found it on e-bay, where does it plug into? According to there advert the problem does not occur on GEMS, how do I know what I have?

on the top of your engine looks like fingers thats a thor. and i would think you have a thor in yours.. and it pugs in pass side footwell under glove box..

pete you dont fit it you only plug it in when you need it..
indeed you no when you need to plug it in when the engine turns over but does not fire or start up i keep mine in the cubby box
if you live near mobile phone masts , wirless networks, cordless alarms etc these can all be factors for interupting or wakeing/interfearing with the becm a freind of mine has a diesel p38 and his needs resyncing about once a month and he is convinced its his neighbours cordless cctv system:)

if yours is a x plate 2000 model its a thor engine with bosch motronic engine management so the sync box is suitable:)

Good to see the standard of knowlege of the highly trained 'technicians' at main dealers is worth every penny of their extortionate charges.

Reminds me of my first experience of a BMW main dealer. 4 hours to measure the oil pressure to see why the oil light was coming on. Result - Service technician - 'It's fine'.
Me - 'Ok, so what was the reading and why is the light coming on?'
Service tech - 'umm'.

Hi ALL, I am now looking to buy the said BECM Resync Box, however the ECU is not where its supposed to be under battery cover at rear of battery. I have been told by Tawpark it may be behind the glove compartment box. Just trying to get this sorted as quick as possible before it leaves me stranded again. I am confirming it is the ECU for the resync box to do its magic on before I buy!!!
Thank you in anticipation.

As J the Range mentioned earlier, it plugs into the socket in the passenger side footwell under the glovebox - all interfacing is performed via this socket as far as I am aware. The BECM itself will be under the drivers seat but you won't connect to that directly.

Guy

take the blue aerial wire of the rf receiver before you buy a new one ,if the battery stays up then get a new one.as I said before it worked on mine thanks to this forum.

the engine ecu on yours is fixed to the bulkhead on the passenger side in the engine bay , it wont be under the battery cover as only the gems ecu was placed there,
the sync mate is plugged in in the passenger footwell under the glove box near the centre consol [you have to get your head right down under the glove box to see it]:)
