deefender 90 has caught a cold i think as the battery doesnt seem to be turning starter over bumped it this morning and fired over in a second but when i left it for a few hours it just gave that continious clicking sound .Theres lights on dash as tho ive got plenty of life but just not enuff to turn her over ive checkedall connections on starter and battery and they are fine.does this mean battery life is over idont know how long its been on as just bought it if i need a new battery whats the best amps i need for her.The one thats on is like a big long wagon battery but dont know if its the proper one thanks lads

It is most likely the battery , but just make sure that you are charging OK before you bin it !

Assuming it is the battery get the largest battery in terms of CCA (cold cranking amps) that will physically fit in the battery tray. In this case bigger is definately beter. Make sure the battery connections are in the right place or you will have to mess around with the cables to make them reach.

just because theres lights on the dash dont mean the batterys are at full capacity

Jump start it and check the charge rate. It should be between 13.8v and 14.5v with the engine running. Drive it around for 20 mins and then pop into a garage, tyre dealer or halfords of your choosing and ask em to test the battery. It's a very quick test that most places will do for free and will give you a pretty accurate answer.

Add on a couple of extra earth leads from battery to chassis and chassis to engine, you can get a couple for under £10 in halfrauds and they make a big difference as any corrosion may be impeding the flow of current round the starting circuit

Where abouts 'just outside Newcastle'?

That could mean anywhere in Northumberland!!

DM me!

Having had a D2 and now a Defender TD5, I have had this problem with both vehicles. each time this has been down to the starter solenoid. Remove the starter and dismantle the solenoid. Chances are the copper contacts have melted to nothing. last time I re-made one of the contacts starting with a flattened piece of 15mm copper pipe then shaped and drilled it to match existing. Still working a treat!

could i rule out solenoid if whenput on mates battery it fires up 1st time worked fine all day and now just clicking again i changed earth cables today and its now on thekitchen bench on charge i know it will start 1st time tomorrow on a fully charged battery but i think my battery isnt holding its charge was thinking maybe alternator but the battery light hasnt warned me or owt

Yes you cal rule out the solenoid and earths if it fires first time on yer mates battery. Is your mates battery now flat? What was the voltage reading with the engine running?

i didnt leave his battery on the car ratty as he needed it straight back so put mine on a boost and it was fine but only for a limited period .i will put mine back on tomorrow with a full charge and go through all connections once more ie-earths starter alternator then if that fails its gonna have to be a new battery hope im not wasting my hardearned cash tho

shifty my defender is 1992 model and them on fleabay are abit later thanks
Sorry mate thought you had a TD5. You need to check what voltage your alternator is putting out. You need at least 13.8 volts in order to charge your battery. How old is the battery? They dont last forever.

no my charge light goes out thats why i dont think its alternator on another note i went to local auto shop for new earth leads and enquired about abattery he lookedthru his catologue and said he could get one i asked about amps and it was 70 amps i told him theres another one that does 90 plus amps [extra crancking] he closed his catologue gave me a filthy look and said you seem to know better than me and left me standing there like a naughty kid! i told him to get a life and walked out - his loss

Thats why this country's retail industry is in **** state. If it was my shop you would have walked away with the battery you wanted and not what the poxy book says. Even if I'd had to order it in.

I had the same problem when my wife's Volvo battery went down. Volvo told me I had to have a 500 cca 55Ah battery when the battery I'd just taken off was a 750 cca 80Ah (Volvo branded) one which had been on the car from new. The technician said it would fry my alternator??? I reckon they just did not have the one I wanted in stock. Did me a favour though as I got a replacement one for 2/3 of the price at my local motor factors. I wonder how many other poor bods have been fobbed off in the same manner.
