I grew up not far from there Salford was considered a rough dodgy borough of Manchester but not as bad as moss side :D

Most of Moss Side and Hulme are no more. It's all been redeveloped into acres of apartments and coffee shops. Same with Salford. The docks look more like Canary Wharf now. To get a proper beating you have to travel these days. Eccles has managed to retain some good fighting pubs and mugging is on the up in Cheetam Hill.

You might also like to check the height...

It IS possible to get a battery that fits the tray like a glove and looks perfect... right up until the moment you close the bonnet, and you find it's just tall enough for the stay to rest neatly on the +ve terminal just as the bonnet catch clicks fully home.

Don't ask me how I know. But it came out of a Shogun v6...

Ha ha. That's how I once set fire to my 109 ex RAF ambulance. Cardboard was a quick fix to get me back home.

Good news the battery fits, and what I change it has made to starting the ol' girl....
BUT.
Since fitting it is struggles to get to 35-45mph, especially when cold and a kind of popping sound can be heard.
I have checked all connections and all are good and nothing shortening.
I will put the old battery back in hopefully later today or Friday to see if it goes away.
The battery that came out was an old Halfords on with 500CCA, think it was a 72 number.

I can't imagine how a battery would cause those symptoms.

I will check the above thanks - it wouldn't be down to the alternator struggling to charge the battery and the HT leads or plugs having issues

Think of the battery as a tank, and the alternator as a pump. (Voltage is "pressure", current/amps is "flow", the battery capacity/Ah is the size of the tank). The alternator will put the same maximum output out - it'll just take longer to fill the battery from totally discharged. Or, for the same amount taken from the battery, you'll just have more in reserve.

No, the battery won't - can't - cause problems with the leads or plug. The voltage floating around the system with the engine running is down to the alternator, and the plugs and leads see a far, FAR higher voltage being put out from the coil anyway.
