Hi
I went to start Disco today and everything was dead, alarm not working ,central locking ...everything was dead.

I charge the battery regularly as its not used every day, last time was 4days ago.Checked battery volts and it was 4.5volts DC, battery was new in June 2020. Tayna say its got a 4 year warranty do you think they will honour it or will they say Sulphation.I never let it go unattended for more than 5 days just trickle charge it.

I jumped started it and then put it on charge.
I have been measuring the drain with a clamp meter and get 10 -20millli amps, which I think is okay.

Apart from battery failure cannot think of anything else unless I missing something....any thoughts please?

10-20mA drain is fine - very low & obviously not high enough to drain the battery for a long time
4.5 volts is very very low - was that measured on the battery terminals or elsewhere ?
Could you have a loose battery connection ? Could the lights have been left on ?
If not, the battery is very dead.
The only way you'll find out what Tayna say is to contact them

First off it’s not a great idea for a battery always to be on charge a Good working system should start after weeks being parked

if your getting low pull on Amps perhaps a dead sell get it put on a proper battery tester before you start scratching your head to much could just be a sell down dragging it down If it’s in warranty chuck it back at them

Charge it up, then disconnect the battery from the car and allow to stand for 24 hrs, then measure volts, not a definative answer but a starting point.

Yup, that a good start as stated, a fully charged battery will be or should be 2.1v per cell so 12.6v or slightly above. 12.1 -12.4v is partly low and the battery should be charged asap, below 12v is considered fully discharged by the industry, again it should be charged up asap, if left in this state it will reduce the life of the batteries cells… so it’s worth checking every month if the vehicle isn’t used much.

I haven't used mine for about a month (fr. hub etc) & it started 1st time yesterday so I could apply the brakes whilst doing that d/shaft nut up, having said that for the last week I have had a Halfords solar panel charger plugged in to the OBD port & the battery is only three months old. As has been said fully charge it off the vehicle, check the voltage, leave it for 24hrs & check the voltage again to see if there's been a big change but as I've found out with my CBR600, I got a new battery last yr. made sure it stared ok then removed it & charged it once a month with a Optimate charger then when I refitted it last week it wouldn't even turn it over so I fitted a new battery today. Funny old things batteries they don't like being left unused, best of luck.

Not much progress yet, went to Halfords today for free battery check, but machine had broken which tests them,so need to go elsewhere, so far battery has not lost any charge at all…which is most odd.
The only thing that had power was the clock,as I looked at this and thought I can see what time it failed, but could not as it said correct time…Thank you all for the tips I will update.
I am thinking a bit like Andy new battery..it’s been on trickle charge with my CTEK. 5.0 between runs, so never neglected. 15 months old,I write the month and year on the battery with felt-tip pen always that it was fitted.

Tbh if not using the car at all, I reckon you would be better totally disconnecting the battery, even the clock will kill the battery given enough time.

On the date thing, great idea, I date everything I buy/fit/replace, sometimes amazed how long I have had some of the stuff.

Definitely a new battery is needed.
You can search online for a Tayna discount/promo code.
Sadly I think your right....just checked volts again in 24 hours the battery has not lost any charge at all...still does not explain why it went down so low early ran the week to 4.5voltsDC.
I have read of early battery failure.

As I charged it regularly would it still Sulphate up?,as this is excluded from the warranty from Tanya.

Any recommendations for a brand existing is EXIDE on a v8 petrol...thanks

I don't have an answer to your mystery I am afraid but an intelligent charger like a Ctek has a desulphation cycle and allegedly can be left permanently connected to cars stored between occasional uses as once it has finished charging it goes into a monitoring mode and only provides a charge when required to in order to keep the battery tip-top. I have used my Ctek to bring allegedly "dead" batteries back to life.

Hi, I used this battery on my TD5 & it seems OK so far (if you have to buy another).

Tbh I would avoid any online battery retailer incl Tayna, any issues means getting the battery back to them.

Get a halfords trade card, and get your batteries there, any issues and its just a quick drive to the shop for them to sort out.

For a battery to present 4.5v and then be seemingly normal.. are you sure it wasn't a bad connection/dodgy reading in/around/on the multimeter?

Take your point, but you're more likely to have issues with Halfords battery then a reputable online retailer. From my experience. Unless you get lucky with a particular store, i don't believe they look after the batteries they keep in stock

Interesting about battery sources with my TD5 long gone I had for 10 years, when the 1st battery went off I went to local Land Rove dealer and paid a lot of money for a replacement ,this was probably 10 plus years ago.I was shocked when it failed at 1 year 1 month and they refused to replace it and charged my 1/2 hours labour to test it.I complained but they would not let me have my TD5 back without the money, next I went a specialist battery shop and they supplied me with a battery.
They said as it was so big it was a commercial and only had 1 year warranty again.
I have never found online or local much good and i think the warranty's are a bit worthless....Bit like a Kia car warranty I had!..another story.

I am sure checked and rechecked good Fluke meter.

I have been told I have to send the battery back to Tayna...that would be expensive.

Bit of news.
Battery has been tested and passed the test.
It came out as "good". results...... internal resistance 4.84mOhms
12.8 volts
Life 72%
They said its good does not need replacing.

So not sure what to do part of me thinks still buy another as I have read so many stories of short life batteries in Disco 2s...do not know why.+
When I had my TD5 I had short battery life and that was used a lot, often in bad weather.
My wife's Toyota she had from new now 18 years old still going strong and the 1st battery lasted 10 years and it only goes local pottering around..makes no sense at all. I kept the battery and only replaced it because of age and I charge it every few months and its still fine.Perhaps I should buy a Toyota battery.!

going to check wiring now.Do not know why.

Thanks Andy.
My Disco is a petrol and my leads would not fit this one sadly.I bought new leads from JLR during lockdown and would not want to buy anymore.
Bit sad really as I have a set of swage tools to make them just got these in a moment of madness.
I will see if he has got a 75amp Probat for mine.

Yeah anything purchased on line can be a pain to return but I agree with Kermit_rr I don't think Halfords care for their batteries like some of the specialised battery sellers. I got a battery for my FL1 about 3 yrs ago (Yuasa) & when I fitted it, the s/solenoid just clicked but like you say they change things without issue. I didn't know when I ordered it but the battery I fitted to my D2 was supplied by a company in Luton so if there is an issue with it, it's only up the road from me.

I'm not sure how English motor factors work for the general public but here in N Ireland I go to my local factor and get trade discoun. I tend to buy Bosch or Varta and they last well. I have an AC Delco, bought for the Disco 11 years ago which still works well in my red top Cavalier. I always disconnect batteries when cars are stored and charge them approx every 6 weeks.
By the way, never store a battery on the floor, seems to kill them.
