You might be interested to know that if your dad sits in the passenger seat, you're provisionally entitled to the B+E license (so you could in fact do the towing, with L plates attached to the front and rear). However, on your own, it would be illegal for you to tow it even empty. ;)

Thanks for that thats really good info, I'll get some pratice in then, and def get my test done this summer.

If the vehicle MAM is over 3.5t then it will fall in to category C1 up to 7.5t and category C beyond that.

There is no upper limit to train MAM in B+E although the trailer MAM must not exceed the towing capacity of the tow vehicle.

There is a limit of 8250kg train for C1+E based on pre-1997 grandfather rights, as indicated by the 107 endorsement in section 12 of the photo licence.

There is a limit of 12000kg train for C1+E if taken since 1997 as a discrete test.

so as long as you passed yr test b4 1997 you get the 8520kg limit for combined loaded weight of yr car trailer..

if ya passed after 1997..
* a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes (3,500 kilograms) maximum gross weight towing a trailer of up to 750 kilograms maximum gross weight (up to 4,250 kilograms in total)
* a trailer over 750 kilograms maximum gross weight as long as it is no more than the unladen or 'kerb' weight of the towing vehicle (up to 3,500 kilograms in total)

sorry just trying to make sure i got it right in my ed...

passed my test prior to 1997 so am a bit senile...

mine says I can drive a "Track laying vehicle"
whatever one of them is.

Do you have a link to the legislation on that bit please Ian? I can't find it anywhere.

The trailer MAM can exceed the vehicle towing capacity, but if so you cannot fully load the trailer - it must always weigh below the max towing capacity of the vehicle. It hardly ever applies for LR though, because the heaviest trailers with overrun brakes can be, is 3500kg, which is the towing capacity of most Land Rovers.
