Doing the first service on this today 6500 miles, the service interval quotes 12000 but the customer wanted it done early :)

Really easy to do all the filters are easy to access

And only took half an hour to do

This doesn't need to be done at a main dealer as long as you use genuine filters it does not void your warranty

Quite like the interior and te build quality seems good :) only time will tell though ;)

You know, looking at those pics of a new Defender, it makes me think Landrover/tata really will be making an awful cock-up if they go away from this iconic shape. OK, it'll never sell big in America (their biggest market apparently for 'other' vehicles) but her and in many other countries it's just so 'right'.

OK, it can be tidied up, but to me the only way to make it better might be to stregthen stuff they already have .. like the swivel area, make that into a simpler, 'proper' king-pin type arrangement rather than the swivel balls and seals maybe, or make them come as standard with diff locks, or options to fit, at the factory. Make things like CDL linkages 'proper' engineered linkages, or even cohesive structures and engineered assemblies, not just bits of bent wire like they are now! Offer the upgrades as options or upgrade paths for older Defenders/Discos. Would it be so hard to make the oil filter, and sedimenter for instance, easily changeable?

If they concentrated on actually improving parts and sub-assemblies rather than pandering to market tastes and fashion I reckon they'd be in a far stronger place.

I'd agree with that. The defender still has that rugged style which is understated, and still classic. Not to mention the ability to be repaired in the arse end of nowhere with a hammer and some gaffer tape.

The problem is that they are too driven by the marketing people who think everything needs to look "cool", and by bureaucrats who think that it needs to comply with even more red tape. They make more than enough options for someone who wants a shiny shiny to take the kids to school. How about keeping this one for the purists, and for those who buy them as a workhorse, not a showpiece.

Reading up on the new rangerover sport I am hoping that landrover keep the 3 two system that is currently avalable, the high class luxury stuff, range rover, range rover sport and evoque, the middle ground, Disco 4 and freelander, and utilitarian the defender, each with it's own level of technology and luxury, then each market is happy you have your big wigs with there leathe and advanced electronics, the middle ground all rounders and the workhorses each having there place :)

That stuff is good , anything that is labeled as penetrating fluid .
Not multi purpose as wd ;) ps with what your doing oxi might help

Plusgas is bloody amazing stuff! Well worth the money imho.
Word of warning though if ya get it on ya hands wash it off straight away cos it irritates your skin like buggery! I found that out the hard way.

3 in 1 penetrating fluid and plus gas both leave wd in the shade.

Thats chaps, I picked up some plus gas at the weekend and had a go; SO much better than WD40 and GT85. Even leaving for a few mins while focusing on something else it was effective, so I doused any nut/bolt/screw that I could see with it. :D Also started using the cracking it 'on' then unwind it 'off' technique.

Agreed, not to worried about the others as such, though I do like range Rovers, but the Defender just doesn't need changing other than mechanical improvements.

Big trucking today, 3 hours to 30miles north of Leeds drop off load and bring back another

He's just borrowed the trailer and it looks tiny now :p

Im really jealous of your enthusiasm , I see going down the workshop as a punishment for doing a engineering degree and not law or something that makes money.

Just finished work after fixing another dealers **** workmanship, somehow the guy who spent 2 days servicing this machine had failed to notice that not only had the main bearing worn out but it had also worn the bearing completely away aswell as the bearing housing and had worn the shaft 2 inches into the surrounding frame ... And to top it off had chopped 6 inches out of the chain to get rid of the slack produced by this wearing.

Absolute tool ! Haha and the chain was knackered anyway so we replaced that too, god knows why farmers keep going back to these idiots I don't know when me and dad worked 4 hours overtime so he can carry on work in the morning haha anyway least I get overtime pay :D haha

I agree!

Serviced our disco 3 today, she has a hard life and so is serviced regularly to keep her moving haha

Fairly simple service to do here is the location of the oil filter, under the top cover on the engine
1A392E54-BB88-45ED-B196-3B3A8E448A1C-2076-0000018E813885D5.jpg

The fuel filter is a little more hodden away, it's under the plastic cover below the gearbox behind a second cover on top if the chassis rails,

Aswell as the service the front antirollbar bushes needed replacing, te drivers side Is easy to get to, the passenger side is abit more tricky

You cannot get to the top but as the engine mount is in the way so you have to wedge the engine up and move the mount to one side
D65593D1-D524-49B3-8911-E129628B46CA-2076-0000018E509532F3.jpg

Then with a wobbly extension and a long extension you can get to it :)

As you can see the bushes were quite worn ...

Whenever I service a disco 3 RRS I always clean and adjust the handbrake as this is a very common fault.

First remove the nut holding the disk to the casing, don't worry about wedging on the threads there more than strong enough to take it
T50 torx end

Then you'll need to remove the calliper and housing to remove the disk, you will probably have to slack off the handbrake adjuster to get the disk off

Then I shotblast the disks to get a good clean surface and even face and to get rid of as much dust and crap as possible
DA220108-DBE3-4D18-85CB-3D451891E853-2076-0000018DD7D44A09.jpg

Then give the housing a good blowing out with an airline and emry cloth the pads clean

This is the handbrake adjuster

Put it all back together and then tighten the adjuster with a screwdriver flicking the moves around until you cannot move the disk with your hands then slack off the adjuster 8
Clicks, you'll feel the clicks when you move the adjuster :)

Then clean up the pads with some emery cloth and put everything back together again with plenty of gods saviour copper Greece :)
