yer strap wuz put on cos the over extension of the standard shocker would damage the internal valving.
its got nowt to do wiff how much yer axle moves or how long yer flexis are. and and and yer dunt get them on the front

Yep. You will get loads of axel articulation when you have over extended and pulled the shaft out your shock. Not a problem on the road as the bigest things you will come up against are kerbs, speed bumps and the occasional traffic warden. (Seriously tho) Jack your landy up till your shock is at very near maximum travel and then mount the axel strap touching the axel tube. Ive just got some extended ones and you cut, drill and bolt at whatever length you want. All it needs is for the brake line to get pulled and come slightly loose with just the smallest leak and when your driving back from your pay and play day and half way round a tight sliproad pulling off the duel carrageway your breaks fail. Its not worth not fitting them just to get an extra 1/8" axel travel.

Got my first Land Rover in 75, and never had axle straps, or any problems I could blame on not having them. I try not to drive fast enough to get it bouncing off road though.
Incidentally, snapped check straps should fail an MoT, missing check straps should not.
