No sorry just the fact that it has crept forward slowly with a lot of revs in drive but for about ten foot then stopped

By the way all the correct gear display on dash ok when selected , and the two green flashing M,S warning lights they do go when ignition off then on but appear when gears deleted thanks again.

Could he have a transmission problem beyond the gearbox? Like prop donut or half shaft? I'm assuming there aren't any bits of steel lying on the floor or anything!
Will rover, have you tried it in both Hi and Lo ratios?

it has to select the same gears in the box, if you cant select p then cable isnt operating the box lever at all or correctly ,that will put on the green warning lights

good thought t /box in neutral would give same symptoms ie no p or drive
When I picked my Disco 2 Auto up after buying it in Warminster, I drove out the town heading south, i got about 5 miles and suddenly lost drive.
I pulled over and couldn't get it to move in any gear. Talked it over with my mate, called the previous owners who were devastated, called recovery, sat and waited, then suddenly looked at the Hi-Lo lever. Tried it. It had somehow slipped into neutral. Decent shove into Hi, no problem, drive restored. Has never happened since!
This could possibly be OP's problem, which would be a big sigh of relief! Especially if he isn't used to autos!

Yes it's in hi , I started it earlier it's got a high squeaking sound for about a minute then gradually drops off and all's quiet apart from the V8 but I thinking this could be lack of oil in the gear box and it takes a bit of time for whatever is in there to circulate and stop the noise but it's still not enough to engage gears what's your theory?

Run the engine, keep running, t box in neutral (safety) and handbrake on, wheels chocked, get under it and undo auto box fill plug see if any runs out, should be slight dribble, or level with the plug. Also inspect colour, black= knackered, Brown, worn/ old change it, nice and pink, new in good condition. If you change fluid drop the sump and change filter as this could be blocked and check the magnet in the sump, little bit of grey mush is ok and normal any lumps or shavings are a sign it’s got issues. There generally a very sold box and quite simple compared to new autos like new mercs with 8/9 gears.

I've dropped the sump today drained the oil the total amount was 2.5 litres and rust brown but the excess dripping from the box after sump removal was quite clean anyway got it all cleaned up just waiting for delivery of the filter ect , what amount and correct filling process please can't find instruction in manual if you could help please any info thanks

Think from empty is about 9 litres but don’t quote me on that but not applicable anyway as yours is fluid change not dry fill so some fluid will be left in the torque converter.

Anyway it’s about 5litres or slightly over, I know when iv done mine iv got 1 gallon and 1 litre to be safe, once you change filter and reassemble, open level plug on side of box, pump fluid in until it starts to dribble out, then loosely put plug back in, then in car, handbrake on, Chock wheels and transfer box in neutral, get someone then to start engine and you go back under it, remove filler plug and start pumping fluid back in, during this process the person in car needs to go park-reverse-neutral-drive-3-2-1 holding each gear for a few seconds, then work way back up the gears back to park again, hold on each gear, once this process is complete and you see fluid dribbling from the hole put the plug back in, then switch of engine. Job done. Take it for test.

Since the fluid was manky and very low I’d drive it hundred or so then do a fluid change again.
