In the current Autocar there is feature on the history of the Range Rover.

For the P38 they basically say it's unreliable and should be avoided.

Can't argue with either of those points really

Haven't read it, but sounds like another piece of dramatic generalization about P38's. I know some of the build quality is 'ify' and they have more than their fair share of funny quirks, but my experience of ownership has been better than a lot of motors I've owned over the years.

Listening to the eldest at home after work (Mech at Toyota Main Dealer) you would think Toyota's were the most unreliable motor on the planet when stats show them as one of the most reliable.

its also one of the few that can easily be kept free of rot on both body and chassis

I have had mine for 10 years and it has been very reliable. The problems have been with all the rubber bits that perish - air bags/ o-rings/ hoses etc.
Underneath it is very good. Little sign of corrosion.
I have no regrets buying it.
