Points to sticky solenoid valves IMO.

He needs diagnostics Keith. He says he can rev it to 5k static with gearbox engaged. That should not be possible. If something was not knackered before it will be now. You should never ever rev an auto that high with box in neutral or park nevermind when in gear.

I'm no expert but doesn't the box limp home in 3rd with the torque converter lock up clutch engaged thus no slip?

I agree in principle Tony, trouble is unless there is a faulty sensor or a bad connection, it's unlikely that any faults will be recorded, there is no feedback to show whether or not a solenoid has operated when it is called:(

Yes i know, but take a look a gearbox schematic diagrams for which clutches should be engaged for each gear. Torque convertor is filled as soon as engine starts. Forward or reverse clutches are engaged manually with gear stick all others are electronic. He either has seriuosly low oil pressure or a seriuosly gumed up valve block. You should not be able to sit there with torque convertor full and forward or reverse clutches engaged and rev the engine to 5k. There is a solenoid that controls oil pressure maybe that is dicky. It needs diagnostics to see if there is an electrical problem, if there is nothing then it is mechanical. If as he says it is going in limp mode something must come up on faults.

Just to ad reving to 5k may be an exageration! Today i have tryed to drive it again ! I start it up no faults displayed i put it in drive and it slips badly to the point it hardly moves! i rev it to just over 25000rpm and clunk bangs into limpmode and drives without slipping i can stop and go no trouble its just stuck in 3rd if i select r though it slip and then select drive it slips in limp mode turn engine of and fault displaying goes and gear selection display is back on dash and i start the process again . all i wont to know is will limpmode be ok and not slip if forward and reverse slip out of limp node ? P.s i will higher a fortune teller with a crystal ball to pull the fault codes

If you have RAVE look at faultfinding for gearbox. There are several different senarios for limp mode. You really do need to get it on diagnostics to find out where you stand. Guessing is not going to get you anywhere. After that explination sounds like you have lost one or more one way clutches.

25000rpm? :eek::eek::eek:

It's going to fail completely IMO if you keep provoking it. As Wammers said getting the fault codes read will eliminate some things. It's possible to test the selection solenoids for correct resistance/continuity with an ohm meter at the Auto Box ECU connector to eliminate connection problems.
You absolutely sure the oil level is OK and that the "O" rings are not missing from the filter?

So what sense i can make of it is that the ttorque converter and clutches are it ok because it does not slip in limp mode . i understand that d and r are on seperate clurches and i cannot see how two clutches can fail at same time . this points me to a pressure problem or electrial ! This is my novice opinion am i right or not ?

i think id just pull box of ,remove bell housing ,pump housing ,valve block ,and check ,most mechanical issues are at front end

Hi datatec i wish it was filter or o ring all have been renewed! Of i have to remove box i will replace it wit a second hand working unit ! Remembering not to break the pump when i fit it :) i have learnt alot on here thanks if anyone has any ideas if its electrical and can be fixed it situ please let me know ! Or if i can troubl shoot some more things . i did read some amazing stuff on a bmw forun about the same box and trouble i will post the link if i can thanks again all

test solenoids as suggested ,slipping would indicate a mechanical fault as with solenoid not operating fully or box

PM me with an email address and I will send you some stuff that will give you the electrical data etc:)

thanks datatek got that and thanks everyone else for you pro advice ! im getting codes pulled and il update when shes all better .
