Cut a long story short theres a bit of white plastic inside the gear stick that pulls up with the button to select a gear . I've got the knob off and this piece has snapped off inside. Phoned local landrover parts and they've said £250 for a new part as it only comes as a whole.

Can anyone please tell me a way round getting this tiny bit of plastic to pull up to select a gear

You could probably get 1 from a breakers no problems.

Is it part of the selector knob or part of the selector assembly, bolted to the floor? Do have a picture of the offending item and where it goes?

I believe that's part of the knob assembly.

Looks like number 16 to me any ideas how to frig it as I can't move the car at the moment!!?

That's what I thought. To move the lever, you'll need to pull up on the plastic thingy that's broken off. Or you might be able to lift it from below, although that'll be tricky with the console in place.

Can yer use some needle nose pliers to pull the middle bit up (bit that's snapped) inside the tube?

Do not for get you have to press the brake pedal down as well
