Well any LR will feel tardy compared to the M3!

They all shift about even when in command shift if the car decides it needs to shift, such as if you're sitting at way too high revs and not accelerating or trying to pull away in 4th (as I did today when chatting away on the phone and forgot I was in CS)

Command shift is great. Yes it will change up or down depending on the situation and if you stop, it will start off in 2nd which is great for bad weather. and will stay there until it hits/gets close to the red line.

I could not force my Yeti DSG into 2nd in bad weather. It would always select 1st regardless. Thats progress for you :D

I hope you were on handsfree...

Was in the new one, has built in blue teeth ;)

Yeah, it's my first move away from performance cars in about 15 years so there's a bit of trepidation for sure.

Yeah, my car changes down if I'm being lazy and let the revs drop, although it doesn't change up for you, it will bounce off the rev limiter if you let it. But with the Evoque it didn't just change down if you let the revs drop, or change up if you were over revving it literally reverted to auto. It does sound as though this is not normal though so either something wasn't right or it was user error, most likely the latter. I did have it in S though

Command shift doesn't activate until you start changing gear yourself, there's effectively 3 selectable modes (normal auto, sports auto, command shift). It probably does revert to sports auto if you stop using the gears, but after all, it won't be set up the same as the E92 as its a proper automatic gearbox as opposed to a twin clutch manual, and a very different kind of car

When I had a problem with my low pressure fuel pump it would not change up as it didn't rev over 3000rpm on that occasion.

The auto should change up in command shift when you reach the red line or thereabouts, so if it isn't, then you have a problem somewhere, not necessarily with the auto gearbox.

Well that's added to my confusion lol as some are saying it shouldn't revert to auto and then you now say it might, and from my experience it did.

Just to clarify so we're all on the same page, I put it in S and pulled the paddles and it allowed me to change gear. However, if I didn't change gear for a while it reverted to auto meaning if I accelerated it would kick down (which you wouldn't expect if in manual, it should just accelerate in the gear you are in). If I used the paddles it would immediately revert to manual. So it's kind of like manual with auto override if you don't use the gears for 30s or so.

All other auto boxes I've driven stay in the same gear, so if you put you four down it does not automatically kick down. The ONLY time they change is they change down to stop it stalling if you let the revs drop too low. I could even forgive changing up if you're hitting the red line, but what I don't want is kick down when I don't want it too.

I think kick down would be the same as dropping to lower gear if the revs are not high enough for the demand....

If I get chance I'll take an Evoque out tomorrow and check it out - did you test a 6 speed or a 9 speed?

Well been back out on the Evoque manual and took the FL2 auto out today. Drawn a line under the Evoque, drive feel bland and oh my god is it uncomfortable. After about 50mins I was ready to get out as my back, bum and legs ached and no matter how I adjusted the seat I couldn't make it any better. Unfortunately I had another 45mins to get back to the dealers

Took the FL2 out and much preferred that. I didn't even mind the auto box, and it did stay in manual all the time unlike the Evoque. I asked the salesman about this and he said the Evoque will always revert to auto regardless of mode. So the FL2 is still on the cards, and the 0% finance is even more of a lure.

Couple of things regarding the FL2. Firstly can you get something to make the armrests wider? I have particularly broad shoulders and could do with the armrest being closer to the centre of the vehicle, I have to have my arm tucked into my side as they are and it's not natural/comfortable. Secondly can you buy and extension for the gear knob as when you are resting on the arm rest the gear knob sits below. Neither of these are deal breakers btw, although could add to the comfort.

Based on the fact I don't mind the gearbox I can now look at getting the metropolis. Ideally I'd like it to look like the Dynamic but with the spec of the Metropolis it's hard to overlook. I did enquire how much it costs to fit the Dynamic body kit, £3200 apparently :eek::eek::eek::eek:

No, two totally different things. Kick down is under acceleration and in order to give you the optimal acceleration for overtaking and such like. However, when you have a heavy right foot like I do, every time you accelerate it kicks down 1 or more gears leading to a big pause (if it's gone down several gears) and 'rapid' acceleration which is not always wanted. I did find on the FL that even on manual you can get it to kick down but is when you go past the point of resistance of the accelerator (called the overdrive in the good old days I believe). This is very different to the auto box kicking down as and when it chooses to. I like to know when it's going to do it, not be surprised by it. I'm a bit of a control freak like this ;)
