Good call. I was really pleased with the difference it made.
Slightly higher revs at higher speeds but I rarely take it over 60mph anyway...
Torque converter also locks up at 41mph vice 51mph.

That would be nice - it's currently locking at 59mph because of the tyres.

I'm being thick here but is that a Defender one? Higher revs on road but better off?

Yep. Bigger tyres change the gearing and fitting a Defender box brings it close to what it was. I can sell my old TBox to a Defender driver who wants to drop the revs on the Mway. :D

Ashcroft Transmissions - Ratio Calculator

Managed to pick up my 1.410 Defender transfer box on Wednesday - drove from Southampton to Stoke to drop off my parents and then Stoke to Riddings in Derbyshire and then back home. 495 miles in total!!

Here's what I bought.....

Land Rover Defender LT230 Transfer box Ratio 1.4 (Standard Defender TD5)

Removed from my 2003 TD5 Defender approx 95k miles.

I have done power grades to engine and need to raise gear ratio so fitted a Discovery Transfer Box and this is now surplus to requirements. Would suit Trialer or straight swap for damaged box.

These are sometimes fitted to Discovery TD5 for better towing power (Lower Ratio gearing than Standard Discovery).

I have removed sump and checked gears and all are in good condition with no excessive wear. Bearings are all good with no whining when in use. Central diff also inspected and no excessive wear there either. High / Low ratios also free and working correctly.

This has a cross drilled input gear also included and all seals and gaskets have been replaced where required during inspection.

Comes with remaining gaskets for P.T.O. output covers required to fit transfer box to your main gearbox.

I saw the guy's TD5 Defender in his drive and it was an immaculate road only vehicle. Pics to follow. :D

Theoretical questions based on a skilled LR mechanic.....

How long does it take to change a transfer box?
How long does it take to change a torque converter?
How long does it take to change a transfer box and torque converter?

I want to get my transfer box in ASAP but I also want a heavy duty torque converter. Do I get the transfer box in now and the TC later or do I wait and get both done together? :D

You could do both at the same time. To change the Torque Converter you need to take the main gearbox/transfer box off the vehicle.

How many hours for that Dave? I can't afford the HD TC at the moment so wondered how long a T-Box only would take.

Need to be nice to 'er indoors! :D

Unless you have garage style equipment, a gearbox/trans box removal is a big heavy job.

By comparison a trans box replacement is a piece of cake. Doing it yourself, it's probably a 2 hour job.

I don't do oily bits Dave!

My mechanic charges £40 an hour. I can cope with two hours to change the TB now and then go for the HD TC in six months (wishful thinking). How many hours to do the whole lot (TB and TC) in six months? :)

If you change the T box now you won't need to change it again it 6 months; but if you want to change the TC then you will need to have the Tbox/autobox assembly removed, to allow access to the TC.

Just a guess but I would expect an experienced LR mech to take 6-8 hours for that job.
