I appreciate that it's not one of life's great problems but it's been annoying me for years.
Can anybody tell me what is the mechanism which keeps the exterior wooden cover for the ashtray shut ?
(It's a press/open)

Don't know for sure but i suppose it is just a push to open push to close latch.

Just won't stay shut at all. There must be some mechanism keeping it shut because it seems to be spring loaded for opening. If you ever find out let me know.

It's an offset spring latch. If it's not shutting, one of the guides is probably worn.

I'm sure I have a full surround spare in the garage that stays shut ,if your interested I'll look it out. I had this issue but found sliding it slightly to one side held it shut after buying the spare

Thanks Wurzal. I'll try Domino's suggestion and if it doesn't work I'll come back to you.

Jiggling makes no difference !
A bit of foam wedge does the trick.
How much for your surround Wurzal ? If I have to take the panel off to get it fitted I'll just stick with the wedge of foam.
Where in N. Ayrshire ?
I started out from S. Renfrewshire.

A tenner sounds fair : want me to send you a cheque ? I've got a Paypal account if that would work.
I know Dalry well. I used to get the Dalry bus home to Howwood where I was brought up. Like yourself, Edinburgh Uni and never got round to going home.
Let me know what you want me to do.
Thanks.

Here's a pic see what you think PayPal prob easiest I'll pm my details

TAKdriver, whilst changing your gear surround this would be the perfect time to hard wire in your sockets.
Agreed ! I've checked Rave and this would make perfect sense. All I'm figuring out now is precisely where to locate the sockets. Inside the glove box would be the obvious provided I can get a suitable hard fix. Happy to hear any other suggestions.
