Ive seen it mentioned a few times about Discos pulling this and that that have been stuck here and there, and as i was passing Asda today a HGV was just spinning itself on the spot, trying to reverse out of loading bay. No joy.

Now then, if i was to lend a hand in such a situation, what would i do? Just wrap the correct type of rope round towbar? Ok so lets decrease the weight to, say, 4 ton, and it needed moving. Is the towbar capable of taking the strain?

P.S if you know the answer to this, answer me uvver fred on towbar advice please, ta.
 
no way is a tow bar capable of taking the strain of a 44t hgv. most towbars are rated at 3.5t. i have a dixon bate heavy duty 5t rated towbar but i still wouldn't tow a 44t hgv with it, if you feel the need to tow lorries that are stuck(**** knows why anyone of sound mind would) use a point on the chassis ;)
 
On a similer subject, I live on a terrised street with cars down each side. I go to leave in the mornign and there is a dust cart broken dorn in the road, no one can get round him.

I wondered shall I try and help him, then thought no as I would look like a complete plumb if it did not work.

I was thinking the same about the tow bar as it is the obvious place to pull from. If you don't use the towbar then I gues you ghave to put a strap like a spansett round the chasis to pull from but I only have 2T spansets and 3.1/4T Shackles. It just does not add up to a potential 17T of dustcart.

I have no doubt that the car has enough torque to pull that kind of thing.
 
very true james but just think of the strasin putting on all of your vehichles components just for the driver to say, thanks mate. i bet he wouldnt say heres 50 quid for the wear and tear on your car, it may sound harsh but i say **** em let the recovery boys sort em out ;)
 
The Institute of Vehicle Recovery has a way of devising the effort required to winch a vehicle in different circumstances. Using this method a 44t vehicle on a flat, smooth road with no damaged wheels would require 1.76 ton to move it. Providing of course it has enough air to release the brakes.
 
A few years ago myself and a collegue recovered a stranded artic from Newbury showground using his 109 series 3 this did not require putting undue strain on the vehicle as it gave the lorry just enough traction to get moving. a 44tonne dead weight would however be a slightly different matter

if it was on flat smooth tarmac it wouldn't be slipping on the snow. lenny was onabout the asda at arrow park which has an uphill loading bay so there fore it was up a hill of about 20 degrees and stuck in snow. not beinbg funny stan but do the maths

any motion of pulling on a vehichles chassis put undue strain on the material of the towing vehichle, whether you used the xchassis or the towbar this would definately put undue strain on the metal and cause stress. yes you gave the lorry a little help and yes the lorry was moving under its own steam but you definately put undue strain on the vehichle. ask any physician and he will bore you to death explaining it. ;)
 
****ed off lenny, ive had my head under the cab of a 44tonne tractor unit(funnily enough) for the last 6 hours.

Jesus that must of hurt. If i get my head stuck under the bonnet of my car it hurts :)
 
evenin all, no ormus he aint havin a laugh, i am a member of the avro and irv so stan is not having a laugh
