Am seriously considering just that! ;-)
I did similar with my old defender. When the engine was shot I bought a 600 quid discovery, drove it home and stripped it on the drive. 300tdi went in mine and I stripped the rest for parts on eBay :p.
Just be warned, I bought a discovery last year for the transfer box and ended up keeping the disco and selling the defender

Really??!! Don't think a Disco would do for me.....shame I divorced my ex hubby he was a mechanic

My Defender td5 is in the garage at Famous Four right now, looks like the head is cracked and may need a new/recon engine. I'm gutted!! Been quoted about £2,300 if it's just the head and about £7,000 if it needs new engine. Has anyone used them before?

At around 1500 for a new head the head swap price seems vaguely reasonable, but 7k for a new engine... ouch
My head was replaced / upgraded to the newer type around 100K miles, what year is your Defender, the older heads were a weakness

Had my discovery for a year and I don't miss the old defender. The feeling of 'is it gonna be nicked if I park it here', the noise, the wet leg, the cramped inside What's not to like :D

Sounds like there may be more than one problem here. A cracked or porous head lets fuel into the oil. But not the other way around, because there isn't an easy way for pressurised lubricant to find its way into the fuel gallery. Well maybe it's conceivable that the metal between an oilway and the fuel gallery could break down, but then the injectors wouldn't let it into the cylinders if the ignition is off. If there's oil getting in the combustion chambers, the overwhelming likelihood is that it's coming through the oil seals on the turbo.

@Tattybird - try now - there was extra carp in the link for some reason :mad::D:rolleyes:
They'll be on their way upstream to spawn now that spring is in the air. Put garlic on them, wrap them in foil and put them on the exhaust manifold, and they'll be done in time for tea.
